RMEF Grants Help Youth, Elk, Habitat in Oklahoma

Grants provided by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will fund archery, shooting and hunting heritage programs for hundreds of youth in Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. The funding will also improve elk and small game habitat in Kansas and Oklahoma, and go toward elk research and tree replanting efforts in Nebraska.

“It is vital that we invest resources in promoting and sustaining our hunting heritage,” said David Allen, RMEF president and CEO. “These grants show our continued commitment to reaching out to the next generation in a part of the country that was home to historical elk range.”

Bearcats fall to Coalgate

Family members, friends, and fans traveled to Coalgate Tuesday the 11th to watch our Bearcats take on the Wildcats. In the first quarter our Bearcats started off strong with Sr. Bryce Martin shooting 60 from the field with 9 points 4 rebounds and 2 assists in the first half.

Community speaks out after Newtown shooting

We have all heard and been touched by the story of the heavily armed man that walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut on Friday, December 14th, and opened fire. Within minutes, 26 people were dead at the school, 20 of them children and 6 adults.

Collision in Rattan leaves one dead

Monday night while trying to remove a dead dear from the roadway, that had been killed in an earlier accident, Marie Hilburn’s vehicle was struck from behind.

Hilburn, 39 year old female of Spencerville, had been traveling east on HWY 3 in Rattan when she stopped her vehicle in the road to remove the deer. Hilburn’s Ford pickup was hit from behind by a 2005 Mazda that was being driven by Janice Rose Headrick, a 60 year old female from McAlester.

ODOT holds Employee Appreciation Cookout

A General Contractors lunch was held at the ODOT Division 2 Headquarters on Friday, Dec. 14th, to show their appreciation to the hard working men and women that help repair and maintain our roadways and bridges.

“This is our way of saying Thanks to all the guys and gals who work so hard to maintain and build our roadways,” said Bobby Steem, the director of the Association of Oklahoma General Contractors. “As contractors we just want to do the job right and give the tax payers what they deserve and pay for.”

It began with an unsolicited and unexpected telephone call from a Sawyer native by the name of Albert Shirley who is employed as a Construction Manager for Flint Energy Services Ltd., “a leading provider of engineering, construction and technical services for public agencies and private sector companies around the world”. Mr. Shirley contacted Little Dixie Community Action Agency’s (LDCAA) Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program director, Mrs. Karla Luginbill.
