Adam J. Steele

Adam Joseph Steele was born July 18, 1977 in Oklahoma City to Rick and Debbie Steele of Antlers. Adam was riding his motorcycle on September 2, 2012 when a vehicle accidentally turned in front of him, causing him to lose control. Adam was taken to the OU Medical Center and was pronounced dead the following day, September 3rd. Adam saved many lives by generously donating his organs to several people within the state. In 1995 he graduated from Antlers High School where he excelled in football and academics.

Sue O’Connell

Sue O’Connell was born September 10, 1940 to Wilma Doris and William David Latham in the Miller Community near Antlers. She passed from this life on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 in Enloe, TX., at the age of 71. Sue was a 1958 graduate of Paris High School in Paris, TX. She has lived in Bryan , TX., for the past 12 years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan, and was a member of the Women’s Guild. She was an excellent home keeper and loved to read.

Betty E. Vandiver

Betty Ethel Vandiver was born on November 1, 1922 in Yukon to Horace Herman Park and Etta Jane (Howell) Parks. She passed from this life on Sunday, September 9, 2012 in Hugo at the age of 89. Betty married Grady Roe Vandiver in 1942 in Claremore. She was a homemaker and a member of the Antlers Methodist Church and the Eastern Star in Antlers. Betty lived on a ranch near Antlers for many years helping outdoors. After her husband’s death, she moved to Atoka and later to Hugo where she lived for several years.

Pushmataha County Fair to take place Sept. 19th - 22nd

Once again it is time for the Pushmataha County Free Fair to take place. Indoor fair entries will be accepted on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 beginning at 10:00 a.m. and will close at 6:00 p.m.

On Thursday, September 20, 2012, all baked goods and fresh flower arrangements must be entered by 9:00 a.m. The exhibit building will be closed until after the judging is completed.

All livestock must be entered by 12:00 - noon, on Thursday, September 20, 2012.

Drugs found during stop

A county man is facing a felony drug count after a pipe for smoking methamphetamine was found during a traffic stop.

Pushmataha County Sheriff's Deputy James Marzek was assisting the Oklahoma Highway Patrol with a vehicle safety check at the intersection of Buddy Renee Rd. and Post Oak Rd. on Sept. 1.

Marzek made contact with the driver of the vehicle, Alejandro Hernandez. When asked for his driver's license and insurance, Hernandez told the deputy his license was in his work truck. Marzek noticed the man seemed nervous and his eyes were bloodshot.

Marijuana found during stop

A county man faces drug charges after a traffic stop turned up marijuana and paraphernalia.

On August 31, at approx. 9 p.m., Deputy James Marzek, with the Pushmataha County Sheriff's Department, stopped a blue minivan at State Highway 2 and Lawson in Clayton.

During the stop, Marzek smelled alcohol and marijuana in the van and asked everyone to exit the vehicle. A passenger in the front seat, Roy Smith, had an open can of beer and a hand-rolled marijuana cigarette on the floor by his feet, according to reports filed in district court.

Exemptions Added to Statewide Burn Ban

Burn Ban Remains in Effect Due to Continued Wildfire Danger

Governor Mary Fallin today announced that exemptions have been added to the statewide burn ban, although the Governor’s Burn Ban continues to remain in effect. The decision was made in consultation with Oklahoma Forestry Services, a division of the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, and based on existing wildfire fuel conditions and ongoing drought.

Flora Austeen Gilliam

Flora Austeen Gilliam the daughter of Dick and Flora (Miller) Gilliam, was born on November 20, 1921 in Pittsburgh, TX. She passed from this life August 24, 2012 in Fort Worth, TX at the age of 90. Austeen was the fifth child of Dick and Flora, with a sister and brother born after her. She used her middle name so as not to be confused with her mother. When most of her brothers were in the military service during World War II, Austeen also decided to serve her country. She joined the Women’s Army Corps.

Billy Wayne Johnson

Billy Wayne Johnson was born May 18, 1956 in Antlers to William Henry and Gertie Mae (Sanders) Johnson. He passed from this life August 26, 2012 in Antlers at the age of 56. Billy married Deborah Tankersley on September 5th, 1988 in Antlers. Billy enjoyed hunting & fishing, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. Billy was preceded in death by his parents: William Henry & Gertie Mae Johnson; sister: Sharlene Henley; brothers: Frank Johnson, Paul Wayne Johnson, Bobby Ray Johnson; and a nephew: Lee Edward Johnson.

Local boy contracts West Nile Virus

The story of Summer 2012 has been the record-breaking effects of West Nile Virus, a story that hits close to home with the news that an Antlers boy is among those who have contracted the illness.

Although symptoms range from mild to life-threatening, the boy suffered a milder case of the virus, according to his grandmother.
