Flora Austeen Gilliam

August 30, 2012

Flora Austeen Gilliam the daughter of Dick and Flora (Miller) Gilliam, was born on November 20, 1921 in Pittsburgh, TX. She passed from this life August 24, 2012 in Fort Worth, TX at the age of 90. Austeen was the fifth child of Dick and Flora, with a sister and brother born after her. She used her middle name so as not to be confused with her mother. When most of her brothers were in the military service during World War II, Austeen also decided to serve her country. She joined the Women’s Army Corps.

Teams rain during Bass tournament

On Saturday, August 25, members of the Pushmataha County Sportsman Club competed in a team bass tournament on Sardis Lake. Contestants fished under cloudy skies with light rain and moderate temperatures for most of the day, which was much more enjoyable than the one hundred plus degree temperatures of the last several bass tournaments.

Bearcats shutout Haileyville in scrimmage

On Friday, August 24, 2012 the Antlers Bearcats faced off in a home scrimmage against the Haileyville Warriors. The Bearcats did a great job maintaining control of the game and scored 2 touchdowns against Haileyville. The Bearcats defense shutout the Warriors and held them to a scoreless game. The Bearcats were fired up and it was obvious to the fans that they were having a blast playing the game they all love. The Bearcats will play in their season opener Friday, August 31, 2012 in a home game against the Valliant Bulldogs.

Annual Labor Day Festival kicks off

Labor day weekend is upon us and for residents of Pushmataha County we all know what that means, other then a day off work on Monday; it means The Annual Choctaw Nation Labor Day Festival and Pow Wow kicked-off on Thursday, August 30,2012, with the Choctaw Nation Princess Pageant in the amphitheater at 7:00 p.m. The Choctaw Village will also be filled with cultural activities.

Duncan named Sheriff of Push Co.

The results are in! After a tense race between Terry Duncan and John Arthur the County has spoken and Duncan has been named the Sheriff of Pushmatha County.

Duncan received a total of 1,103 votes compared to Arthur’s 816 voters. Duncan received 57.48% of the counties total votes.

For the race between Markwayne Mullin and George Faught for the Republican candidate for Representative of District 2 (in Pushmataha County), Faught won with a total of 50.23% of the votes (108). Mullin received 49.77% (107) of the votes.

4th Oklahoman dies due to WNV

A Texoma man has died of West Nile Virus, bringing the death toll in Oklahoma to four for 2012.

WNV was claimed the life of Bill Brady, a 77 year old man from Healdton, OK., who was undergoing care at Mercy Hospital in OKC.

Family members say Brady learned he had the virus just a few weeks before his death. His

family members say dealing with the West Nile Virus firsthand has been life changing, and asks everyone to protect themselves and wear bug spray with DEET.

Collision results in head injury

A personal injury collision resulted in a Rattan woman being flown to St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa with head injuries on Sunday night.

Shelly Cook, 46 year old female of Rattan, was driving a 2000 Ford northbound on HWY 93 when she rain off the right side of the roadway, over-corrected and ran off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle struck the ground and overturned 3/4 times and came to rest on the driver’s side.

Woman arrested for embezzlement

Felony embezzlement charges were filed against an Antlers woman accused of making unauthorized charges to a borrowed credit card.

According to information filed in district court, Anita Jane Scott, Antlers, faces a single felony count after a woman who allowed her to borrow her credit card at the HiWay Inn called the Antlers Police Department.

Sen. Inhofe visits Antlers

Senator James Inhofe met with residents of Pushmataha County last week at the Wildlife Heritage Center Museum in Antlers.

“Inhofe's visit is a very good thing for the community and a great use of the facility,” said Verne Jackson, operator of the Wildlife Heritage Center Museum. “We are open for all parties and candidates to use and I am glad that they are. His visit [Inhofe] gives us and the City of Antlers more exposure.”

Heaven Leigh Hunter was born August 13, 2012 in Oklahoma City to Michael and Sequina (Taylor) Hunter. She passed from this life August 13, 2012 in Oklahoma City. Heaven was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandparents: Wilson & Delores Taylor; paternal great-grandparents: Myrtle & Don Hunter.
