Relay For Life Friday, May 6

We all remember our first Relay for Life event, and if not you need to attend one. We found a community that welcomed all. We found a place where we could celebrate the lives of people who had survived cancer and remember those we had lost. At Relay we found friendship, healing and empowerment. 

Dogs Causing Problems in Antlers

On Monday, May 2, 2011 during the Antlers City Council Meeting there was a full house as many residents of Antlers came to show that they were fed up with the stray dogs and dogs who's owners allow to run loose around town. One woman in attendance had been bitten by a Pitt Bull while walking down the street.

Wet Roadways Cause Fatality

On Monday, May 2, 2011 between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. a fatality collision occurred on State Highway 3 approximately 2 miles east of Rattan.

A black 2005 Chevrolet Impala being driven by Brandon Ray Winship, a 24 year-old american indian from Rattan, was traveling west on HWY. 3 when he departed the roadway to the right and struck the guardrail causing the vehicle to overturn once and come to rest beside a small creek.  The driver was partially ejected through the passenger-side window.

Rams Headed to State

The Rattan Rams are headed to the Class A State Baseball Tournament in Oklahoma City on Thursday, May 5.   They won their Regional Tournament at Rattan this past Thursday and Friday beating out three other teams.  Congratulations!

Bearcats Hit Four Home Runs in One Game

Four members of the Antlers High School Bearcat Baseball team hit homerums during their District Game against the Hartshorne Miners on April 28, 2011. The Bearcats ended up winning this game with a final score of 15 to 6. They then went on win another game against the Miners which clinced their spot in the Regional Tournament! Way to go Bearcats!

The four boys who hit homeruns were: Arizona Taylor, sophomore; Tyler Spear, senior; Kayl Bryant, senior; and Bryce Martin, sophomore. Needless to say the fans attending the game were more than excited as they cheered their team to victory.

Osama Bin Laden Dead

Sunday, May 1, 2011 is a date that will forever be remembered as the day that Justice was finally served. Almost 10 years post 9-11 the American people got to hear the long awaited news that Al Qaeda’s leader Osama Bin Laden had been killed at the hands of American Troops.

Governor Signs Law Expanding Self-Defense Rights

OKLAHOMA CITY – Governor Mary Fallin today signed into law House Bill 1439, authored by Representative Steven Vaughan and Senator David Myers. HB 1439 expands the right to use deadly force when in fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily harm. Current law allows individuals to use deadly force only in their homes; HB 1439 expands that right to include their place of business. The bill takes on November 1.

Antlers 8th Grade Girls Honored at Tea

On Friday, April 8th, 2011, the 8th grade girls of Obuch Middle School were honored at a graduation tea hosted by Dr. Twana Smith. The tea was held at the First Baptist fellowship hall in Antlers. Twenty nine lovely, well dressed young ladies enjoyed specially prepared snack foods, cake and ice cream and beautifully decorated tables catered by Vonda Reed. Several ladies from different occupational fields were invited to attend and speak to the girls about being successful in life and in their careers, taking care of their bodies, being thankful, and finding positive role models.

Obuch Middle School Holds Can Drive For Tornado Victims

On April 21, 2011, Mrs. Willis’ science classes at Obuch Middle School in Antlers had a canned food drive for the Tushka tornado victims. The classes competed to see who could bring the most can goods. Altogether, close to 500 cans were donated by the students and their parents. The 6th hour six grade class won the competition by bringing 228 cans. They were rewarded Friday with popcorn and a movie.

Run For Education An Amazing Success

The Antlers Elementary held a 5K Run For Education on Sunday, April 17, 2011. The Run for Education was extremely successful as the 5K raised 37,000 dollars to be used for furnishing and other needed supplies for the new elementary building currently under construction.
