Zebra in Push Co?

It's true! There are now 6 zebra living just outside Antlers in Pushmataha County, Oklahoma!

Becky Franks, owners/operators of Rebel Hill Guest Ranch, has proudly added zebra to the list of many things guests can enjoy while visiting her Guest Ranch located just outside Antlers on Ethel Road. That’s right, six of these wonderful creatures graze alongside a shimmering pond just miles from downtown Antlers.

Over the weekend a live MMA Fight took place at the Grant Choctaw Casino Event Center. Attendees were thrilled to watch every punch of this hard-hitting mixed martial arts
sport as the Rage on the River returned to the casino for the second time, “Revenge.”

Local assistant manager at Sonic, Perry Cannon, stepped into the octagon against Mike Wright, a fighter from Ft. Smith, TX., but the fight didn’t last long. After a mere 33 seconds into the first round, Cannon won the bout with a guillotine choke, leaving his opponent unable to fend Cannon off.

Wreck kills one

Stewart G. Holmes, of Wister, passed away following a collision that occurred on February 8, 2013. He passed away on Feb. 9th at 7:30 a.m. at St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa due to injuries sustained in the collision.

The collision occurred on HWY 271 and Cephas Roberts Road near Albion in Pushmataha County.

Holmes’ 2005 Nissan Altama was westbound on HWY 271 and ran off the roadway to the left for unknown reasons and struck a tree. The driver, Holmes, was pinned for 25 minutes before being freed by Clayton and Talihina Fire Departments when they utilized the Jaws of Life.

Three local stores sell to minors

Region 6 Regional Prevention Coordinators partnered with the Oklahoma Alcohol Beverage Law Enforcement Agency and the Antlers Police Department in conducting a string of Alcohol Compliance Checks in Pushmataha County.

According to reports there were nine stores that were checked in the county, three of which were out of compliance; these stores included liquor stores and convenience stores.

Bearcats go on 8 game winning streak!

February 1st our Bearcats traveled to Atoka to take on the Atoka Wampuscats, who we had already taken on and beat at home so they were looking for a bit of redemption on their home court. In the beginning it seemed Atoka was up to the challenge ending the first period four points ahead with a score of 11-15 Atoka. Sr. Guard Harlan House was the leader in stats for this game with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3steals and 2 assists in the first half alone.

Children’s Theatre Auditions to be held

The Missoula Children’s Theatre is back once again and is ready to start holding auditions for the 2013 production of “The Secret Garden.” Missoula will cast 50-60 students from the community. Students will audition and then practice from 2-4 hours each night that week, depending on their part in the play. Their will be 2 performances on February 22nd, one for the school and one for the public at 6:30 p.m. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible to audition and there is no cost involved. Parents will need to provide snacks and supper for their child.

Rattan teachers achieve Teaching’s Highest Standard

After two and a half years of hard work, Rattan High School teachers, Sheila Brown and Melissa Miller, have been named as National Board Certified Teachers. National Board Certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance based, peer reviewed assessment of a teachers pedagogical skills and content knowledge. NBCTs demonstrate advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices similar to the certifications earned by experts in law and medicine.

Two listed as critical after collision

Clarence Savage, a 70 year old from Antlers, was transported by Eagle Med Air Ambulance to Parkland Hospital in Dallas after a collision that happened west of Grant in Choctaw County. Savage was listed in critical condition with head and trunk injuries.

On Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, Savage was driving a 1997 Mercury south on HWY 271 when a 2007 International Semi, being driven by William Treese of Missouri, made an unsafe left hand turn in front of Savage.
