Georgia May Self was born October 21, 1904 in Antlers to David and Carrie (Fowler) Roebuck. She passed from this life on June 27, 2011 in Antlers at the age of 106. Georgia lived and worked her entire life in the Antlers area. She married Chester Self on January 17, 1948. She enjoyed spending time with family and the many friends she made during her lifetime. Georgia also enjoyed traveling thoughout the United States. She was very proud of her Choctaw heritage and proud of being one of the original enrollees into the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
Jerry Eugene Brown was born November 10, 1947 in Atoka to Jerry McKinley and Carrie Cordelia (Johnson) Brown. He passed from this life June 26, 2011 in Tulsa at the age of 63. Jerry had lived in the Antlers area for his entire life. He married Donna Clay in Sobol on December 21, 1967. Jerry retired from Antlers Public School in 2006. He had been in public education for 30 years as a teacher, coach & School Administrator. He enjoyed his dogs & working, but Jerry especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, family, & friends.
Some of our local troops from Pushmataha County have recently had their deployment destinations changed. Originally these troops, members of “D Company 700 Support” out of McAlester, were supposed to be heading to Afghanistan after training at Camp Shelby, MS., since March.
Recent assignment changes, however, have these troops now looking at putting boots on the ground in Kuwait (a small country surrounded by Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf of Oman) sometime in early July for a 9 month tour of duty.
After the extremely wet spring we faced no one would have ever thought that with the 4th of July just around the corner we would be in need of rain as badly as we are. Although we are not in as bad of shape as Florida or west Texas, misused and unattended fireworks could have devastating consequences.
The following steps will help to keep you and your land safe this fourth of July weekend:
1. Avoid mixing fireworks with alcohol or drugs. It’s a celebratory occasion, and its easy to forget that mixing alcohol and fireworks is never a good idea.
On Friday, June 24, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. the Push For A Better America Political Tea Party held a meeting at Molina’s Mexican Restaurant in Antlers. The meeting started out with an opening prayer and was directly followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Oklahoma is leading the way by being the first state in the nation to offer a Pancreatic Cancer Awareness/Funding license plate. It will be available by November 1, 2011. No other state in the nation has such a license plate.
It is a fund-raising license plate for the OU Foundation Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund, dedicated to the continuing research for early diagnosis and treatment and hopefully a cure of Pancreatic Cancer.
Most Oklahoman’s don’t know we have research in Oklahoma for, early diagnosis, treatment and cure for Pancreatic Cancer.
Meaghan Bates, a student at Rattan Elementary, was recently named the 2011 OYRA Champion Barrel Racer.
We haven’t had a scramble in over a month due to lack of participation. We have been playing CATS for the last few weeks but last week there were only 3 of us. Until further notice, the Thursday Scrambles are suspended.
If you are a golfer and want to see Wednesday, Thursday or Friday competitions, get in touch with me and we can discuss something. Without community support I cannot continue to groom the course mid week and have no one come out.

On Saturday, June 25, members of the Pushmataha County Sportsman Club held a bass tournament on Sardis Lake. Once again, anglers had to endure temperatures in the upper nineties and strong southerly winds. The bite was slow with none of the anglers bringing a limit to the weigh-in.
Winning the tournament was Kenny Briggs. Kenny’s stringer weight was 12.70 pounds. He also had the big bass of the tournament with a bass weighing 5.15 pounds.
June 22nd
Dakota Ray Saylors, 1 1/2, passed from this life on Friday, June 17th, 2011 in Morrilton, AR. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 20, 2011 at the Morrilton First Baptist Church in Morrilton, AR. Arrangements entrusted to Bob Neal & Sons Funeral Home in Morrilton, AR.
