Lady Cats bring home 1st Place

This week our Bearcats and Lady Cats traveled to Tushka for the AmeriState Invitational Tournament. In the first round our Bearcats were facing our neighbors the Moyers Tigers. The first half stayed pretty close with Sophomore Tanner Brown putting up 9 points, 4 rebounds, shooting 100% from the free-throw line. The buzzer sounded on the first half with a score of 19-23 Bearcats. Helping the Tigers out were Brandon Slocum with 12 points, and Jake Dudley with 8. The second half our Bearcats were able to maintain a small lead with Jr. Harlan House scoring 8 points, and Jr.

Mason Kellet to play Juco baseball

Mason Kellet, a senior from Henryetta High School and former Antlers Public Schools student, signed an intent to play Juco baseball for Allen Community College, a college much known by their baseball. First baseman and relief pitcher, Kellet has had an impressive High School career here in Henryetta.

Council seeks to approve new city tax

The Antlers City Council hopes to pass a new tax that will be voted on by residents of the City of Antlers on Tuesday, February 14, 2012. This new tax will help to generate funds to repair streets and promote tourism for Antlers.

This tax is being refereed to as the Lodging Tax. However, the residents of Antlers will not be the ones paying this tax. No new taxes will be added to the residents of Antlers by passing this new tax. This Lodging Tax will affect those who wish to use the hotels and motels that are within the city limits by adding a 7 1/2% tax to their bills.

OHP Releases 2011 Fatality Collision details

Information was received this week concerning the delayed release of information from a fatality collision that occurred on November 11, 2011 four miles west of Albion on HWY 271. The collision took place at approximately 10:03 p.m.

A 2004 Toyota pickup being driven by Jace B. Cable, a 22 year old white male from Clayton, was traveling north on HWY 271 when it ran of the left side of the roadway, struck a culvert, overturned twice and threw both the driver and passenger out of the vehicle before it caught fire.

Wet roadways lead to collision

February 2, 2012

On Tuesday, January 24, 2012 an injury collision occurred on HWY 2 approximately 6 miles north of Clayton at 11:05 a.m.

A 2006 Toyota pickup that was being driven by Antonio Gonzales, a 72 year old male from Clayton, was traveling south on HWY 2 when the vehicle hydroplaned on the wet roadway, ran off the road to the right and came to a stop after striking a tree.

Gonzales was transported to the Choctaw Nation Hospital in Talihina and was then transported to McAlester Regional Hospital. Gonzales was reported to be in stable condition with head and trunk internal injuries.

Bertha Mae Wren

January 31, 2012

Bertha Mae Wren was born May 2, 1926 in Daisy to Millard “Froggy” & Ethel (Morris) Morrison. She passed from this life January 23, 2012 in Scurry, TX at the age of 85. Bertha Mae married Roy Otis Wren in Paris, TX in 1946. She had many friends and loved ones in the Finley community, in which she was raised. Bertha Mae was preceded in death by her parents: Froggy & Ethel Morrison; husband: Roy Otis Wren; daughter: Judy L. Wren; a grandson: Jason G. Wren; and her siblings: Raymond R.

Dovie M. Cash

January 31, 2012

Dovie Mae Cash was born August 6, 1912 in Dela to James Albert and Belle (Potts) Robertson. She passed from this life January 19, 2012 in Antlers at the age of 99. Dovie married William Kermit Cash on December 24, 1928 in Antlers. She was a homemaker and lived in this area most of her life. She enjoyed cooking, dancing and she loved to waltz.

Richard D. Williams

January 31, 2012

Richard David Williams, Jr. was born November 16, 1964 in Antlers to Richard and Corrine (Sutterfield) Williams. He passed from this life January 22, 2012 in Antlers at the age of 47. David had spent his entire life in Antlers, working as a self-employed logger. He was a beloved son, father, brother, and husband. David was an avid hunter and also loved camping and fishing. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. David is preceded in death by his father: Richard David Williams, Sr.

How to deal with bullying

Everyone has the right to feel safe in their community, on their school campus or at work.  If you see someone being bullied, know that you have the power to stop it. It isn’t always easy to stand up against the crowd, but that it is what it will to take to put a stop to bullying. In my previous articles we have covered that bullying is still an issue and the forms and signs of bullying. In this week’s article we will go over what to do if someone is being bulled and some of the lasting effects it could have.

Tigers prepare for homecoming & senior night

In light of our upcoming celebrations for the 2011-2012 Homecoming: Basketball through the Ages, our athletic department would like to recognize Mrs. Mary Etta Bollier for her hard work, dedication, and encouragement to our school. Moyers’ very own sweetheart, Mary Etta, has established deep roots in this mountain community and continues to invest in a school system that raised her just years before. She was a basketball star in her day, playing on a team that won 30 out of 33 games her sophomore year.
