January 26th
Everyone has the right to feel safe in their community, on their school campus or at work. If you see someone being bullied, know that you have the power to stop it. It isn’t always easy to stand up against the crowd, but that it is what it will to take to put a stop to bullying. In my previous articles we have covered that bullying is still an issue and the forms and signs of bullying. In this week’s article we will go over what to do if someone is being bulled and some of the lasting effects it could have.
On February 8th, 2012 Ronald D. Devin, of Antlers, will enter a plea of guilty to the murder of William Riley Seale, who was found deceased in his residents.
Devin will be found guilty of 2nd Degree Murder and be sentenced with 37 years imprisonment. Devin accepted this deal after law enforcement visited with the victims family and they agreed to the terms and wished to avoid going to trial.
A collision that occurred in the early morning hours on Sunday, January 22, 2012 3.4 miles north of Antlers on HWY 271 claimed the life of Richard Williams, a 47 year old male from Antlers.
Williams was traveling northbound on HWY 271 on a 2008 Chevy, when he entered a right curve, the vehicle departed the roadway to the left and made impact with a culvert embankment, causing the vehicle to go airborne and overturn 1 full time before coming to rest.
The Howard McLeod Correctional Center, near Farris, is the most recent facility to receive books donated by Southeastern Public Library System of Oklahoma (SEPLSO). On Friday January 13th, Lila Swink, head librarian of the Hugo Library and Margie Jump, head librarian of the Coalgate Library along with Nick White, SEPLSO’s Information Technology support, were on hand to transfer over 1,000 books to the correctional center.
Correctional centers in Idabel, Hodgens and McAlester previously received books. The most recent donation brings the total number of donated books to over 3,000.
January 19th
All last week the Pushmataha County Courthouse was host to the first of four trials of individuals charged with the murder of Robert Strickland of Hugo. This crime took place in April of 2010 and crime scenes were located in Choctaw, McCurtain and Pushmataha Counties. Twelve O.S.B.I. Agents and over 30 law enforcement officers, belonging to multiple agencies in the three counties, were involved in these investigation.
Commander Howard Sumner and Adjutant Neil Kimberlin of Hugo VFW Post 8316 presented awards to 6th grade students at Rattan Elementary for their essays in the "Patriots Pen" Essay Contest.
Ms. Hawkins’ 6th grade class wrote about the importance of patriotism in America. The local winners of the contest were; 1st place: Nathan Carlile-$100, 2nd place: Makayla Cayton -$50 and 3rd place: Kaitlyn Jones-$25.
Makayla Cayton also won District with her essay and will compete in State competition in February.

On Monday, January 16, 2011, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin sent a letter to President Barack Obama asking him to immediately approve the development of TransCanada’s Keystone XL Pipeline, a project which would transport tar sands from Canada to multiple points within the United States, including the Gulf of Mexico. Under current law, the president has until February 21 to declare the pipeline “not in the national interest” or it is automatically approved.Â

January 10th
Starting Friday, January 6, 2012 many of the local area schools traveled to Tushka to compete in their Basketball Tournament.
Local sportsmen have the opportunity to voice their thoughts online now through January 13, 2012, regarding hunting and fishing related rule change proposals currently under consideration. They are also encouraged to attend the Wildlife Department’s town hall meeting on Thursday, January 12th. 2012 at the Wildlife Heritage Center Museum in Antlers at 7:00 p.m.

American Cancer Society Seeks Volunteers for Local Relay For Life Event

As you consider how you can make a difference in the coming year, consider joining the fight against cancer by volunteering for Relay For Life, an event that benefits the American Cancer Society’s mission to eliminate cancer. Volunteer positions are still available, and more information about these volunteer opportunities will be provided at the next Relay For Life planning meeting on February 2nd, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. at the AmeriState Conference Room in Antlers.
