August 16th
Three individuals were arrested after failing to stop at a stop sign on Sunday night, August 12, at the intersection of HWY 3 and HWY 93 in Rattan.
Deputies Russell Bailey, Shawn Culver and James Marzek were involved with a traffic stop after they pulled over a ford pickup which they witnessed running stop sign in the early morning hours. Officers get the vehicle pulled over at the First Baptist Church in Rattan, directly across from Rattan Public Schools.
The Pushmataha County Quilt Guild chooses many projects thought out the year. This year they chose to make a quilt that involved each member making one block and gave it to a soldier from Oklahoma who was wounded while fighting for our freedom. The family of Sandy Luginbill donated a quilt top so that they could give a quilt to a second recipient.
Sue Fuller contacted Mr. Waco Blakley, employee of the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs, and asked him to choose two worthy candidates from Oklahoma to present the quilts to.
A two month old child and her mother were taken by helicopter to hospitals in Tulsa, after the mother lost control of her vehicle 1.5 miles north of Clayton on August 12, 2012.
Courtney D. Butler, a 16 year old female of Clayton, was traveling west on a county road just north of Clayton in a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo with her daughter Payton J. Simpson, when Butler ran off the roadway to the right, over corrected and ran of the roadway to the left. After leaving the road, they traveled about 80 yards into a wooded area.
August 9th
Ground was broke Monday, August 6, 2012 as the City of Antlers began replacing water lines around the Antlers Public School and First Baptist Church area. The project began in the middle of school property in hopes of having as much pipe replaced as possible before classes begin on August 23.
The Antlers City Council called to order their monthly meeting at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 6, 2012. They quickly approved the minutes and purchase orders for July 2012 and then moved onto their first order of business.
Actions for this meeting included approving the 2012-2013 budget, approving cost adjustments to fines and cost charged by the City, and approving the contract with CPA William K. Gauer to audit the City for the FY Year of 2011-2012.
With school just around the corner for Antlers Public Schools, many exciting and some troubling things are starting to take place. A concern has been voiced about low participation numbers in regards to the Bearcat Football program this year and many are wondering if the program will proceed as normal.
In a meeting with Antlers Public Schools Superintendent Cary Ammons, he assured that the program will indeed continue this year as scheduled, but with lower than normal numbers.
Deputy Phyllis Davis of the Pushmataha County Sheriff’s Department retired after 14 years of service to our community on Tuesday, July 31, 2012. She was presented a plaque to commemorate the occasion in a surprise presentation in the County Courthouse. Tears where shed as coworkers and friends wished her well during her retirement. Sheriff Duncan presented Davis with the plaque and stated that it is hard to find someone who is loyal, who does their job without question and who is truly a law enforcement officer. The entire department expressed how deeply Davis will be missed.
August 3rd
As drought conditions continue to worsen across Oklahoma, Governor Mary Fallin has announced that a ban on outdoor burning for all 77 Oklahoma counties is effective immediately and will last until a notice is given releasing the ban.
County deputies recently were involved in a child abuse case after reports were made of an eight year old girl being locked in a cabinet for over two hours while her mother was asleep in the bedroom.
Bobby Ray Merritt, of Rattan, is being charged with child abuse and possession of a controlled dangerous substance following a search of their trailer, that was located in the Rattan Mobile Park, and after two children correlated the same sequence of events to deputies while staying at their grandmother’s home.
With the few rain showers and thunderstorms that have passed through Southeast Oklahoma, wildfires haven’t became an issue in our area as of yet but Governor Mary Fallin has declared a State of Emergency for all 77 Oklahoma counties due to extreme, or exceptional, drought conditions. The order was signed on Monday, July 30, 2012.
Fallin stated that extreme heat and dry conditions continue to affect the entire state and that her administration would be ready to help provide whatever aid and assistance it can as Oklahoma communities work to cope with this drought.”
