District Solo and Ensemble Contest was a great success this past weekend for several members of “The Pride of Antlers” Bearcat Band.
At District Solo and Ensemble, the students prepare pieces of music to perform either by themselves or on small groups for judges. The kids then receive a rating from Superior, a “1”, down to a “5” being the worst.
On Thursday, February 23, 2012, the Free Clinic in Antlers opened their doors for the first time. With a troop of volunteers, including doctors and pharmacists, the Free Clinic is a coming together of many local people to fill a gap in the community’s health care system.
Stroud National Agency (of Ruidoso, New Mexico), is pleased to present the “Agent of the Month” Award to First Insurance of Antlers, a partner of FirstBank. The Agency qualified by writing the most new farm insurance premiums during the month of January 2012.
They were in competition with over 700 independent agents who produce farm business for Stroud National. First insurance has been an agent for Stroud National since August of 2011 and has an excellent history of insuring the very best farm risks in their territory.
On Thursday, February 23, 2012, the Antlers Chapter of ESA donated $200 to the Food Bank located in Antlers. The Food Bank is operated by the First Baptist Church in Antlers and helps supply local residents.

Despite tobacco companies’ efforts to portray smokeless tobacco products as a “safe” alternative to smoking cigarettes, a recent study conducted by cardiologists showed “hard evidence that chewing tobacco harms the heart.” Through With Chew Week, Feb. 19 – 25, calls attention to smokeless tobacco use, highlighting the fact that there are no “safe” tobacco products.
Students from Antlers that were named to the Southeastern College’s President’s 2011 Fall honor roll. To qualify a student must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours of college-level courses with a 4.0 GPA. The students from Antlers were: Colton J. Ammerer, Kayle E. Bryant, Lacey J. Morgan and Neida K. Owens. A student from Clayton was also named to the President’s honor roll, Severt A. Dahl.
On Thursday, February 17, 2012, the Antlers Chapter of ESA donated $250 to the Antlers Public Library to help fund the E-Book service of the Oklahoma Virtual Library Consortium, which now has 15 member libraries from around the state. The Antlers Public Library has now raised the $1,500 annual fee to join this service.
Project SPIT receives the “Smart Start Partner of the Year” Award from Tri-County Smart Start Director, Dennis Willeford, for their outstanding achievements in promoting healthy learning for young children in Choctaw, McCurtain and Pushmataha Counties.

Kacee Schier, an 8th grader at Antlers Obunch Middle School and the daughter of Kathy and Scott Schier, was recently named the Pushmataha County winner of the Choctaw Electric Cooperative’s Energy Camp essay contest. Schier submitted a 150 word essay on the topic: “Write your school Board, addressing a change you would like to implement in your school!” This essay was part of a contest to be able to attend the Choctaw Electric Cooperative’s Energy Camp.
The FCCLA Southeast District III STAR Events were held in Hugo on November 29, 2011. Payton Gentry competed in Senior Creed Speaking and Interpretation and placed first earning her the privilege to compete at the regional contest. Matthew Burch, competed in Junior Creed Speaking and Interpretation placing second; and Emily Wolfe competed in Senior Illustrated Talk.
