TODAY marks big opening day for archery hunters

Today, October 1, marks the opening day of archery hunting opportunities in Oklahoma.

Most popular and widely available is the deer archery season, which runs through Jan. 15 and offers the opportunity to harvest up to six deer. Adventurous archers also have the opportunity to hunt for turkeys, antelope and black bears beginning Oct. 1.

Deer Fest to take place this weekend

The Annual Deer Festival and Outdoor Show is once again upon us. As cooling temperatures, and shorter days, have many residents anticipating deer season, individuals and organizations are scrambling to put the finishing touches on their projects and booths as attendees prepare to make their way for hours of family fun and events. This Deer Festival and Outdoor Show is an annual mainstay for sportsman and individuals who enjoy the outdoors.

Deputies hold fundraiser for Deputy Athena

Okay everyone it is fundraising time. The Pushmataha County Sheriff’s Department is selling T-shirts to help raise money for Deputy Athena’s second hip surgery.

The cost is: Youth:$15.00; Adult: $15.00 (SM-XL); Adult: $17.00 (XXL); Adult: $18.00 (XXXL); Adult: $19.00 (XXXXL); and Hooded Sweater: $30.00 (SM -XL). If you will be unable to pick up your order, please add an additional $4.00 for shipping.

Mail carrier honored with award

Bill Bain a rural carrier for the Antlers Post Office was recently given "Excellence in Safety" award for 38 years of accident free mail delivery. He was honored last week and presented this plaque for his special achievement. He is in the top 10 accident free carriers in our District.

Healthcare Network Takes Bold Steps to Improve Access in Rural Oklahoma

The Southeast Oklahoma Rural Health Network (SORHN), a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, recently changed its name to Rural Health Network (RHN) of Oklahoma. The change comes as efforts increase to improve access to health care for individuals living in Southeast Oklahoma and surrounding areas. RHN members include: Choctaw Memorial Hospital, Pushmataha Family Medical Center, Pushmataha Hospital, McCurtain County Hospital, Kiamichi Family Medical Center and Little Dixie Action Agency, Inc. RHN will be soon adding a critical access hospital and an additional hospital to its network.

Mullin Supportive of New Water Legislation

Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-2) today announced his support of new water infrastructure legislation that creates jobs, cuts federal regulations, produces greater efficiency and transparency, and renews investment in Oklahoma’s waterways as well as those across the nation.

Bigfoot Festival slated for October 5th

The Honobia Bigfoot Organization, Inc., invites you to attend the Honobia Fall Festival to be held Oct 5, 2013 from 9 am until 5 pm at the Honobia Community Center. This year’s events include a 5K run sponsored by the Choctaw Nation, BBQ cooking contest, old car show, kids’ baseball tournament and school art contest.

Warrant issued after burglary

A warrant was issued on Monday for an Antlers’ man after maliciously defacing sheet rock and did damage to a water outlet that belonged to GardenWalk Apartments, causing over a loss of $200.00.

According to reports, on September 4, 2013, Leon Thomas Petty forced his way into an apartment at GardenWalk Apartments in Antlers. The victim’s daughter, who is afraid of Petty, opened the door and Petty made his way into the apartment without her consent with the intent to commit larceny.

Tvshka Homma named Champs of Labor Day Tournament

The Choctaw Nation stickball team, Tvshka Homma, advanced to the finals and defeated the Mississippi Warriors 3-2 in double elimination Sunday to become champions of the third annual Labor Day Festival Stickball Tournament. Tvshka Homma's win over the Warriors, 6-1, in opening night action Friday is the first time an Oklahoma team has defeated a team from Mississippi.
