A lot of changes have been taking place at Antlers Public Schools. They have not only welcomed a new Superintendent of schools but also a new head football coach onto their staff.
Two local student-athletes received rather special awards at week long basketball camp that they attended in Oklahoma City July 10th through the 15th. While at the Oklahoma Christian Cage Camp the girls practiced and learned new skills, participated in scrimmages and took on other teams from all over the state in games. On the last day of camp an awards ceremony was held for the 250 plus attendees who participated throughout the week.
Although we have been hit with record breaking temperatures and no rain, fishing is apparently still going good for Faith and Asa Miller. They caught these large crappie on the Kiamichi River.
Claud Wayne Council was born November 11, 1932 in Portales, NM to Claud Francis and Rosa Retha (Jordan) Council. He passed from this life July 27, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 78. Claud served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War on USS Hancock, USS Brown, USS Louster, & USS Hornet. On October 1, 1956, he received commendation for his performance on the USS Hornet. Claud married Patricia Smith on March 31, 1958 in Hugo. He lived most of his life in this area and in Odessa, TX.
Orval Leroy Dunham was born April 11, 1935 in Pushmataha County to E. H. and Lola Mae (Barnhart) Dunham. He passed from this life July 28, 2011 in Antlers at the age of 76. Leroy lived in this area for thirty years. He was of the baptist faith and enjoyed fishing and spending time with friends and family. Leroy was preceded in death by his parents: E. H. & Lola Dunham; a sister: Cathirene Gibson; and a granddaughter: Charlotte Dunham.
Garvis Leon Crenshaw was born October 31, 1943, in Poteau to Robert and Eller (Goins) Crenshaw. He passed from this life July 26, 2011, in Shreveport, LA., at the age of 67. Garvis served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He married Rebecca Braden on January 3, 1989, in Hugo. Garvis had lived in this area for fifteen years. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchild. Garvis was preceded in death by his parents: Robert & Eller Crenshaw; brothers: Lewis Crenshaw, Jr.
Alford Dotson Bruce was born November 11, 1954 in Hugo to Grover A. and Mamie Lee (Ray) Bruce. He passed from this life July 30, 2011 in Antlers at the age of 56. Alford had lived in Antlers most of his life. Growing up he worked at local area ranches. He married Barbara Collins, raised one stepson and daughter then moved to the Longview, TX., area where he worked for T. A. W. Construction as a mechanic, truck driver, and dozer operator. After their divorce he moved back to Antlers and married Judy Cathy of Coalgate and together they raised one son.
With the economic situation impacting our nation, most citizens have felt the financial restrains, not to mention the growing frustration with paychecks that donâ€™t seem to stretch as far as they used to.
A local resident, LeAnn Rees, owner and operator or TLR Youth Ranch and Horse Rescue, has seen the impact up close and personal with horrifying realty that she can not turn a blind eye to. In the past six months she has rescued two horses that were in critical condition, or would have been shortly.
Two county post offices are in the cross-hairs of a study involving the closure of 3,700 post offices across the country.
Post offices in Finley and Snow are among 100 in Oklahoma, which are included in this study. According to a press release by the United States Postal Service, the trend towards using online postal services led to a decision to "right size" its retail network. The study will be used to "determine the customer needs," and a retail-replacement option would be offered to those communities affected by office closures.
On Friday, July 22, 2011, Jeff Hamill, a young, attractive, and highly intelligent young man left this world at his own hands after years of battling drug addiction. Jeff was born on October 27th , 1975. He was the son of Shelby Hamill of Rattan Oklahoma and the father of Jagger Hamill, age 9, Talyn Hamill, age 5 and Cash Hamill, age 3, all of Hugo, Oklahoma. He was an accomplished drummer, very charismatic, a wonderful son and an attentive father.
