Michael â€śMikeâ€ť Don Wilson was born January 17, 1943, in Hugo to Harmon â€śBillâ€ť Wilson and June (Brackeen) Wilson. Mike, resident of Antlers, passed from this life on Monday, May 23, 2011 at the age of 68, at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. He graduated from Antlers High School in 1961 after attending school in Los Alamos, NM and Prineville, OR. Mike married Nancy Cooper in 1963 and worked as a teller and later a Vice-President at the First National Bank in Antlers. He also worked at the Sequoyah State Bank in Muldrow as Vice-President and Los Alamos Credit Union.
Betty Ann Brown was born May 15, 1949 in Roswell, NM, to Chester Cecil and Margaret (Owens) Standridge. She passed from this life on Monday, May 16, 2011 in Broken Bow at the age of 62. Betty married Charles Lester Brown on December 31, 1965 in Battiest at the Battiest Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and very dedicated to her Lord and family. Betty was a member of the One Creek Valley Church in Finley. It was there that she was very active in the childrenâ€™s church ministry and would cook for them on Wednesday nights before church.
Mamie Hardin was born on January 8, 2011 in Rattan to George Albery and Ada (Potts) Hearn. She passed from this life on Sunday, May 22, 2011 in Leeâ€™s Summit, MO., at the age of 93. Mamie lived in Rattan before moving to Leeâ€™s Summit, MO. She was preceded in death yby her parents. Mamie is survived by one daughter, Paula Hughes of Independence, MO; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Private services will be held at the Ft. Towson Cemetery at a later date.
Last week on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, three of the Senior Baseball players for the Antlers Bearcats participated in the Southeast Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association (SEOBCA) All-Star game in Silo. Kayl Bryant and Clay Rogers both participated in the All-Star game while Tyler Speer took part in the Home Run Derby that was held before the game began.
Miss Whitney Noel, recent graduate of Rattan High School was recently named the third recipient of the Jim B. Collum Memorial Scholarship. It was presented by Mrs. Collum at the Rattan Awards Assembly on Thursday, May 19, 2011.
Tornadoes are one of natureâ€™s most violent storms and can cause fatalities and devastate a neighborhood in mere seconds. A tornado can produce winds up to 300 miles per hour and can produce a damage path that can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long.
Antlers Public School Systems Superintendent, Mark Virden, has officially announced his retirement. His last official day will be on June 30, 2011.
Mr. Virden has been a part of the Antlers School System for the past 31 years, his entire teaching career. The first 19 years were spend as the high school Science Teacher. Mr. Virden then was the High School Principle for 6 years, and finished off his career as the Superintendent of Schools for the last 6 years.
Mr. Virden said that it has been a very good 31 years and that he is going to miss the students and faculty very much.
In celebration of National Hospital Week (May 9th-13th), the Pushmataha County Hospital held a cookout on Friday May 13th for its deserving employees. Also on Friday, the Employee of the Year was named. Pictured above with Stephen Poe, CFO/CPA; is Pam Kirk. Pam has been employed at the hospital for 33 years and currently is the Director of the Labratory. Pam received this great honor for being a dedicated, hard working, skilled and loyal employee of the hospital.
On May 9th & 10th, 2011, Treg Buchanan, a Senior at Antlers High School, participated at the OSSAA State Golf Tournament which was held at the Cimeron Trails Golf Course in Perkin. It was a 54 hole tournament which lasted for two days.
Treg shot a 76 and a 73 on opening day and got a 83 on the second day of the Tournament. When all the scores were tallied, Treg finished tied for 7th place out of a total of 73 high school golfers in Class 3A.
Kiamichi Technology Center â€“ Atoka Campus students won numerous regional contests, qualifying them for the State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Competition. The State SkillsUSA Conference was held in Tulsa on May 1st -3rd.
