Clayton man charged with negligent homicide

On March 27, 2012 charges were filed against Jace B. Cagle, 22, of Clayton, resulting from a vehicular accident that occurred on November 11, 2011 on HWY 271 near Albion. Cagle is being charged with Leaving the scene of an accident involving injury - felony, and negligent homicide using a motor vehicle, misdemeanor.

On November 11, 2011 at approximately 10:02 p.m., Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Tommy Allen was working in Pushmataha County when the dispatcher for Troop E stated that there was an accident on U.S. HWY 271 near Albion.

Excersice stations added to Antlers "Big People's Park"

The City of Antlers has recently started adding workout stations and seating areas at the “Big People’s Park,” located on S.W. “D”. Some of the equipment already in place includes a leg press station, sit-ups and push-up station, biceps and triceps station, ab swivel station and a rowing machine. Also recently put in are seating areas with tables, some without, and trash receptacles.

Statewide election activity to begin April 11th

Statewide election activity begins officially at 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, when the filing period opens,” said Jack Matthews, Secretary of the Pushmataha County Election Board.

Hugo Lake Tournament held March 24th

On Saturday, March 24, members of the Pushmataha County Sportsman Club held a bass tournament on Hugo Lake. Twenty-one members competed in the event. With the lake level some fifteen feet above normal elevation, catching a keeper bass, or any bass at all for that matter, proved to be quiet difficult. Only six anglers were able to bring a bass to the scales at weigh-in time.

Fred McCarty

Fred Gabe McCarty, of Lane, was born on Wednesday, August 26, 1959, to Coy and Betty Vondell Betty (Winters) McCarty in Oklahoma City. He passed from this life on Monday, March 12, 2012 in Maui, HI at the age of 52. Fred attended school at Farris and graduated from Atoka. He worked as a Journey Lineman. Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding horses and team roping. He married Shannon Annette (Martin) on October 29, 2005 in Las Vegas, NV. Fred was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Vondell Betty McCarty.

Ruby Sams

Ruby Juanita Sams was born November 1, 1922 in Victoria, TX., to Joseph Andrew and Emma Elviria (Mills) Stephens. She passed from this life on March 15, 2012 in Durant at the age of 89. Ruby married Ervin Sams on October 2, 1970 in Altus. She enjoyed reading, word searches, and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; siblings; husband: Ervin Sams; sons: John, Joe and Samuel Wable; and a great-granddaughter: Kryslin Streitz. She is survived by her children: Phyllis and Robert Streitz of St.

Trever Thornton-Payne

Trever Thornton-Payne was born January 12, 2011 in Talihina to John Rousseau and Julie Ann Payne. He passed from this life on March 14, 2012 in Antlers at the age of 14 months. Trever was a precious little boy. He loved horses, especially Blaze, and Jax, his Blue Heeler that always kept him out of trouble. He was truly loved and will be missed by everyone who knew him. He is survived by his parents: John & Julie of the home; sisters: Jessica Payne and Rebekah R. of Moyers; brother: Payton Neal of Moyers; many cousins, friends, and other relatives.

Pushmataha youth will speak out against big tobacco on Kick Butts Day

An Oklahoma teen becomes addicted to tobacco every 95 minutes, due in large part to the tobacco industry’s decades-long practice of targeting young people through crafty advertising.

More than 90 percent of surveyed tobacco users said they started as teenagers, and the state figures mirror national findings released this month in a U.S. Surgeon’s General report on tobacco use among youths and young adults.

Surgeon General Regina Benjamin started her report summary with a blunt conclusion: “Nearly all tobacco use begins during youth and young adulthood.”

February sales tax told

Antlers received $100,136 in sales tax disbursements in February, an increase over the $95,522 received in February of last year. Antlers also received a use tax disbursement of $5,352 in February, down from the $6,184 received in February of last year.

Clayton received a $40,416 sales tax disbursement in February, up from the $29,059 received in February of 2011.

Rattan received a sales tax disbursement of $1,530 in February, a decrease from the $2,116 received last February.

Second man found guilty of murder by jury

All last week the Pushmataha County Courthouse played host to the second of four trials of individuals charged with the murder of Robert Strickland of Hugo. This crime took place in April of 2010 and crime scenes were located in Choctaw, McCurtain and Pushmataha Counties. Twelve O.S.B.I. Agents and over 30 law enforcement officers, belonging to multiple agencies in the three counties, were involved in these investigation.
