It was a great day to be a Bearcat.
Following an inspiring pep rally Thursday afternoon at Antlers Elementary, the Antlers Little League Bearcats found themselves pumped up and ready for Saturday morning football. They faced off against the Hugo Buffaloes at Antlers field in a scrimmage against their long time rivals. The 3rd & 4th Grade and 5th & 6th grade teams respectively paired up to battle their opposing teams. It was an event that did not disappoint fans.
In the first game, the 3rd grade Bearcats provided a strong defense against the Buffaloes, causing several fumbles. Bearcat Brayton Hallman completed a successful defensive touchdown on one fumble recovery that brought an eruption of cheers from the stands. In addition, Jayden Cooper intercepted a Buffalo pass, leading to a subsequent Bearcat touchdown. 4th grade Bearcats delivered an impressive offensive showing, resulting in two touchdowns each for wide receiver Corey Jefferies and tailback Caleb Lail. In addition, quarterback Isaac Sorrells threw two passes to receiver Tristan Parrington for two 2-point conversions, and ran for two, himself. The combined efforts of the Bearcats resulted in a 38-14 triumph over the Hugo Buffaloes.
Immediately following the 3rd/4th grade game, the 5th and 6th Grade Bearcats engaged in a hard fought battle against the Buffaloes. Both 5th & 6th grade teams played hard, particularly the offensive line, allowing first time quarterback Taylor Cushman and 5th grade quarterback Cason Gee to perform well on the field. A fumble was recovered by Kaleb Sheaffer, and Zion Wood scored two touchdowns with two 2 pt conversions to tie the game 16-16 at the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime, and fans on the edge of their seats. The Buffaloes scored a touchdown first bringing the score to 16-22. However, a big defensive stand brought by Braden Shaw prohibited the Buffaloes from completing a two point conversion. Then it was the Bearcats turn. Thanks to the collective efforts of his teammates, tailback Zion Wood successfully carried the ball into the end-zone to even the score, 22-22. The ensuing 2 point conversion found Zion Wood once again with the ball, this time achieving the goal and ending the game in a stunning victory over the Buffaloes, 24-22.
The final regular game of this season takes place in Antlers on October 20th, starting at 1 pm, with the 3rd Grade Bearcats, followed by each successive grade team to 6th grade. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for students. Come support your local teams and enjoy some good football. Congratulations, Bearcats, on your wins!View more articles in:
