Antlers Student takes 1st place fourth year in a row

December 22, 2011

Kealey Standridge proudly accepts a check from VFW member Neil Kimberland for once again taking 1st place in their Voices of Democracy Essay Contest.

Once again Kealey Standridge of Antlers won 1st place in the Voice of Democracy essay contest at our local level. The contest is sponsored by the VFW Post 8316 in Hugo. For the 4th consecutive year Kealey has taken first place at the local level. The members at the VFW post expressed how extremely proud they were of Kealey for her great achievement.

This year’s theme was “Is Their Pride in Serving in Our Military?” The National VFW holds this contest annually nation wide. Steps are Local, District, State and then on to Nationals. It is a study in patriotism to promote awareness in our youth.

Kealey is a senior at Antlers High School this year so this is her last year to be able to compete in this contest. In 9th grade she placed 1st at local and 2nd second at District; in 10th grade she placed 1st at local and 2nd at District, in 11th grade she placed 1st at local and 1st at District and as a Senior she has placed 1st at local and 3rd at District. Her essay will now go on to compete at the State level.

“She (Kealey) is a senior this year so we will be losing her. It has been an honor sponsoring her,” said Neil Kimberland of the VFW. “ Whatever she does with her life we know it will be done with true American Spirit! We would also like to Congratulate and thank her teacher Mrs. Gee!”
