Last week our Bearcats traveled to Tushka to play in the Ameristate Invitational Tournament. In the first round they were paired against the Stringtown Tigers, whose record coming into the tournament was 2-6. Tip-off was won by Sr. Bryce Martin, who even though he suffered an accidental blow to the nose, which shattered the bones, he still played the rest of the game, and was the leading scorer for the game with 24 points. Sr. Harlan House was the biggest contributor to the first half of the game with 10 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist. Jr. Tanner Brown was also a big help with 9 points, and Morgan Nabors with 3, closing the first half with a score of 30-16 Bearcats. By the second half of the game it was obvious that this would be an easy win allowing our boys to calm down and just play ball. Despite having a crushed nose Sr. Bryce Martin had 18 points in the second half, making 4/5 3 point shots. Jr. Drew McKnight assisted our offense with 4 points, making this an easy win for our Bearcats with an end score of 63-37 Bearcats, which would move them to the second round facing the host of the tournament, the Tushka Tigers.
In the second round facing the Tigers our Bearcats knew they would have to bring their A-game and were prepared for it starting the game out with the 1st quarter score ending 9-2 Antlers. Sr. Harlan House was again leading scorer in the first half with 8 points and 1 assist. Jr. Tanner Brown was next in line for the first half with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. Sr. Chandon Draper was also a big asset with 3 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist, ending the first half with a score of 22-12 Antlers. Sr. Bryce Martin made up the biggest part of the Bearcat offense in the second half, scoring 11points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal. In the third quarter Tushka would prove they also came to play and would bring the point margin to 1 ending the third quarter with a score of 32-31 Antlers. Jr. Tanner Brown was able to contributed 9 point, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals in the second half, as well as Jr Morgan Nabors with 2 points, 1 steal. The fourth quarter was a tightly fought game between both teams which would lead us to a tie score of 45 going into overtime. The first overtime would also be a close one ending in a tie going into the second overtime. Tushka would end up winning it in the second overtime at the free-throw line ending in a score of 57-49 Tushka.
This would move our Bearcats to the third round, to play for third place against the Wright City LumberJax, who coming into this tournament, had a record of 12-2. In the first quarter both teams kept up a quick pace ending in 15-11 Wright City. In the second quarter Wright City was able to maintain a small lead over our Bearcats with Sr. Bryce Martin leading scorer for the first and second half of the game with 22 points in all, despite playing with broken nose the entire tournament. Sr. Chandon Draper also had a big night with 4 points, and 3 rebounds in the first half alone, closing the first half with a score of 24-19 Wright City. In the third quarter our Bearcats showed up with the talent and determination we all know is there bringing the point margin down to one and taking over the lead ending the third period with a score of 30-31 Bearcats. Sr. Harlan House was able to contribute 6 points and 2 rebounds in the second half. The fourth quarter was huge for our Bearcat defense, with Sr. Bryce Martin and Jr. Tanner Brown having 5 rebounds each, and was able to shut down the Wright City offense only give them 3 more points the entire quarter, while our offense was able to score 15 more points, which ended the game with a score of 45-34 Antlers.
