On April 16-17, members of the Pushmataha County Sportsman Club held their 40th Annual Big Bass Rodeo. The Big Bass Rodeo is a big bass tournament and is the longest, continuous running big bass tournament in the state. The tournament was held at Pine Creek Lake. Eighty-four anglers competed in the event. This number was down from previous years, most likely due to the extremely low lake level due to construction to make repairs on the dam.
Anglers were faced with windy conditions on both days but this did not hamper them from catching several nice bass. Winning the tournament was Virginia Harmon. Her big bass weighed 5.90 pounds. She received a trophy and a check for $525.00. Tyson Hetford finished in second place with a bass that weighed 5.30 pounds. Third place finisher Bobby Trusty has a bass that weighed 5.15 pounds. Danny Hisaw caught a bass that weighed an even 5 pounds to finish in fourth place and Blake Guest was the fifth place winner with a bass that weighed 4.90 pounds. The top 5 finishers all received a trophy and a check for their share of the entry fees. Thanks to generous donations from local businesses, the next thirty-four anglers were able to receive a prize for their catch.
Funds raised from the Big Bass Rodeo help to fund club functions like the Free Youth Fishing Tournament that will be held in May, the couples tournament and fish fry held in June and the annual award banquet where every child that attends receives a prize.
The club’s next event will be a team bass tournament on April 30. The tournament will be held on Hugo Lake and will launch from Frazier Creek ramp. Fishing times will be from "safe light" until 3:30 p.m.View more articles in:
