City Council makes parks “Tobacco Free”

February 10, 2012

The Antlers City Council held their monthly meeting on Monday, February 6, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall, 100 S.E. 2nd Street, Antlers. The meeting was called to order, the quorum was established and then the invocation was said. The first order of business was to approve the consent items from last month’s meeting. The minutes and purchase orders from January were both approved by the council.

Item #4 on the agenda was for the council to be addressed by Virginia Jackson of Town and Country concerning the Christmas lights and decorations in town. Jackson’s, and her groups, concerns were that not all the lights were lit in town. The council informed Ms. Jackson that the light poles, with exception of the four located at the main 4-way at Main and High Street, all belonged to PSO so therefor they could not do anything to the poles, PSO has to do the hookup and any changes that need to be done. The also asked if t he council had any objections to them placing a Christmas tree by the Depot next year. The council gave permission for them to do so.

The council went on to tell the ladies that they will be trying to complete the insulation of the correct hookups for the Christmas decorations up High Street before Christmas 2012. Due to time and availability of workers, this was not able to be completed before last Christmas. PSO has once again told the city that they will help. The Christmas lights on the decorations that were not lit kept blowing fuses and lights and were not able to be operational before last Christmas season but it is hoped that they will be running correctly before the upcoming holiday season.

Next to address the Council was Mary Lou Hunter, the new SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) Coordinator and Randy Springfield. They wished the council to pass Ordinance #2012-01, an ordinance relating to the prohibition of Tobacco use in the City parks and recreation areas. This action was passed by the council and signs will be placed in the big people’s and little people’s park making the public aware that these areas are now tobacco free zones.

The next order of business on the agenda was to consider ordinance #2012-02, an ordinance amending Chapter 3, article 1 Section 3-5 (6) of the Antlers City Code of Ordinances of 2009, providing for a modification of said section for keeping “large” animals within the city limits of Antlers and declaring this decision an emergency. The council approved the passing of t his ordinance adjustment and residents within City limits must be able to provide at lease 10,000 square feet of land to be able to keep horses, cows, sheep, goats, etc. This ordinance went into effect as soon as it was passed by the council.

The next City Council meeting will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 5, 2012 at City Hall in Antlers. These meetings are open to the public.
