City proposes NEW tax

October 31, 2013

The City of Antlers will hold a Special Election on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. The purpose of this election is for residents of Antlers to decide whether or not to pass a 1/2 cent tax increase. This will be a NEW tax, not just a renewal of a tax we already see.

The money collected from this tax would only be used to repair the streets in Antlers. The proposed 1/2 cent tax that would last 5 years, unless reapproved by voters in 2018. The tax is estimated to generate approximately $800,000.00 that would be used to repair and upgrade our city streets.

If this new tax is approved, it would make our total sales tax 10%, which would then be the same as the City of Hugo.

The new tax would not go into effect until around April of 2015. Due to the extremely tight budget the City of Antlers has to work with, and the rising cost of materials, they feel this is the only way they would be able to have enough funds available to properly replace and repair city streets.

While speaking of elections, remember that as of Nov. 1st, a new state law will change the dates and times voters have come to expect for early voting in Pushmataha County.

Now, early voting begins a day earlier - on Thursday - and continues on Friday. Early voting on Monday is discontinued.

These changes have occurred due to the approval of SB 869, which was signed into law in May of 2013. As a result, Thursday, November 7, 2013, is the first day for in-person absentee aka “early” voting, in the November 12th Special Election. Please remember, this election is for Antlers City residents ONLY.
