Council to consider curfew changes

October 3, 2012

At the monthly meeting of the Antlers City Council, Antlers Police Department addressed the council and urged them to shorten the City’s curfew for minors.

As it stands now, all minors are to be at home, or with an adult, weekdays after 11 o’clock p.m. and on Friday and Saturday after 12 o’clock. Officers expressed the difficulty they have been facing with minors between the ages 8-12 causing issues late at night, running the streets well after midnight and running from law enforcement officers. The reason the department is asking for the changes is because as it stands they do not have the power to control these minors. They are requesting the hours be changed to weekdays at 10 o’clock and Friday and Saturday at 11 o’clock.

The council agreed to consider changing the curfew times, or possibly splitting age groups to allow for separate curfews for different age groups. If changes in times occur, parents will be held accountable for the fines wrote to juveniles for being out after curfew and have to explain to the court why they allowed their child to be out. Juveniles traveling to school functions, church functions and jobs will remain immune from these rules.

Also during the council meeting, Shawn Long, Pushmataha Chamber of Commerce president, asked the council for permission to revive the old tradition of placing a live Christmas tree at the south end of High Street (located in front of the City Hall and Fire Department where a tree holder is located in the middle of the street - on the yellow line). Long explained that volunteers have already pledged to donate decorations and he hopes to get students involved in making decorations as well. The council approved this matter and granted the Chamber permission to harvest a tree from the City’s Industrial property.
Joel Taylor, City Manager, addressed the council about an inquiry about the four lots in the 100 block of south High Street on the west side of the street. These properties have been used in the past for haunted houses. The interested party plans on restoring the old buildings. The Council agreed to accept an offer on the buildings and continued this matter until the next meeting.

The next City Council meeting will be held on Monday, November 5, 2012 at 12:00 p.m.(noon). This will be the new time for council meetings. As always, the public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

I believe the most misquoted verse in the bible is, "Spare the rod spoil the child." It really says, "He who spares his rod hates his son. But he who loves him disciplines him promptly." Proverbs 13:24
