Emerson Virden

Emerson Virden, 98 of McAlester, died Friday, July 5, 2013 in McAlester. Virden was born February 23, 1915 in Blocker, he was a son to W. O. and Flossie Ann (Jones) Virden. Emerson graduated from Quinton High School in 1934. He attended and graduated from Connors State College, Southeastern Oklahoma State University and obtained a Master’s degree in Education from Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater. He taught school at Russellville and taught at several dependent schools in Pittsburg County. Emerson volunteered and joined the US Army in World War II, serving from 1943 to 1946 as Master Sergeant with the 86th Infantry. He married Fern Jones August 23, 1947 at the First Baptist Church in McAlester. They were married for 52 years before her death in 1999. Emerson taught as a classroom teacher for McAlester Junior High and then served as an elementary school principal for McAlester Public Schools for 17 years before retiring in 1980. Emerson was a member of First Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for many years. He was a member of the American Legion, Retired Teachers Association and 33 degree Mason. Emerson enjoyed gardening. Emerson married Ruth (Waldrop) Harvey in May of 2001 in McAlester. He was preceded in death by his parents, W.O. Virden and Flossie Ann Virden; wife of 52 years, Fern Virden; sisters: Virginia Martin and Nowassa Folsom. Survived by: Wife, Ruth (Waldrop-Harvey) Virden of the home; Son, Mark Virden and wife, Mary of Antlers; Step Daughters: Kathleen Harvey, of McAlester, Kimberly Harvey of Stigler, Karlene Harvey of McAlester; Sisters: Hazel Duff of McAlester, Wanda King of McAlester; Several step grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. Funeral Service were held at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at First Baptist Church, McAlester, officiated by Dr. Tim Russell with burial to follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, McAlester. Active Pallbearers will be: Tysin Davis, Gharytt Davis, Cody Enloe, Ray Waldrop, Spencer Shafer, Johnny Wagnon, Jeff Carney, Chris Marino, Joe Marino and Chasyn Wagnon. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Dr. James Carney, Dr. Karim Khorasanchian and members of Emerson’s Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 100 East Washington, McAlester, OK 74501.
