Facebook voters help win $25,000 for Antlers Library

May 31, 2012

Deanne Taylor and Patti Lehman proudly display a banner announcing the astonishing news that “Book it!” was named one of the top 40 winners of the State Farm ‘Cause and Effect Campaign’. As a winner the library will receive a check for $25,000.

Antlers may not trend much on Twitter or go viral on many YouTube videos, but it recently was a winner in a nationwide online contest. In fact, a Facebook community seven times larger than its population voted the town an upgrade for its library.

America’s largest home and car insurer, State Farm, was pleased to recognize the Book It! program as one of the Top 40 winners in its Cause An Effect campaign. The program was one of 3,000 submissions that State Farm received in its philanthropic initiative that relies on nonprofit organizations to create solutions to community issues identified by Facebook users.

Deanne Taylor, of the Little Dixie Community Action Agency, submitted the idea and immediately went to work. She distributed fliers and sent emails and text messages for three weeks.

“I had no idea how big this event was going to be,” she said. “I handed out business cards with the website to everyone I talked with each day. The support from all over the country for our small town was phenomenal.”

The State Farm Youth Advisory Board, a diverse group of 30 students, reviewed every submission and helped State Farm select the top 100 finalists. State Farm then identified and paired nonprofits with each cause. These nonprofits will each receive a $25,000 grant to create and execute a plan to address the cause. The Friends of the Antlers Public Library will receive the funds to help bring in more furniture, shelving and new books.

“I already have my shopping list made!!!” stated Library Director Patti Lehman. “Deanne ran across this opportunity while surfing the net, she put in the initial application and worked diligently to get the word out to everyone. The library, and the community, owes her a big THANK YOU!!”

From April 27 through May 17, the Facebook community was encouraged to visit the Cause An Effect site and vote for their favorite cause. More than 38,000 people took to Facebook during the three-week period. Book It! received 17,495 votes, placing it No. 28 out of the Top 40 causes.

The check presentation will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at the Antlers Public Library, 104 S.E. 2nd Street. State Farm representatives will be awarding Deanne Taylor and the Friends of the Antlers Public Library, Inc. a "big check" for $25,000. Everyone who voted for Book It! on State Farm's ‘Cause an Effect’ Facebook competition is invited to share in this wonderful achievement!
