Football Preview - Bearcats

August 21, 2014

The Antlers Bearcats Varsity Football team prepares to take the field to do battle in a test of strength, force, determination, skill and teamwork against their opponents.
The foundation for success continues to build for the Bearcats as head coach Kenny Speer enters his second season with the Bearcats. Prior to Speer’s arrival, Antlers had won only 1 game in three seasons.
Six starters return surrounded by young underclassmen to provide Antlers with play making abilities that will be more run-oriented than last season.
Nick Evens (5-9, 155, Jr.) is an explosive running back-receiver combination capable of highlight reel plays. The Bearcats stable of running backs will include a power game with Bryce Carter (6-2, 210, Sr.) plus the added talents of Lucas Austin (5-7, 165, Sr.), Ryan Davis (5-9, 180, Jr.), Dustin Moorehead (6-2, 195, So.) and Ty Bell (5-7, 155, So.).
Chris Kirby (5-10, 185, Jr.) takes over at quarterback, who Speer applauds for his ability to read the opposing secondary coverage and make smart plays. All of the running backs will figure into the passing game along with Connor Copeland (6-1, 180, So.).
Dakota Taylor (6-2, 305, Sr.) and Timmy Martin (6-1, 255, Sr.) will be joined by D.J. Wing (5-9, 275, Sr.) in the offensive line that will have added depth with Indy McNutt (6-1, 190, So.) and Drew Crow (5-9, 240, Jr.).
Six starters will provide experience to the defensive efforts that Speer is confident will be strong against the run.
The muscle and size of Taylor and Martin along with Tyler Bowman (6-3, 265, Fr.) and Lane Sisco (6-3, 280, Jr.) create a force on the interior while Jake Johnson (6-0, 185, Sr.) and Wyatt Clark (5-10, 185, So.) get the nod at defensive end. The linebacker trio of Davis and Austin return proven experience and will be joined by Mooneyham. Speer has moved physical and aggressive play maker Carter to free safety to complete the secondary along with Evans, Copeland and Raven Bowden (6-1, 175, So.).
“One game at a time is how we get better,” stated Speer in an interview with VYPE Oklahoma Pigskin Preview. “I’m excited that last year’s start continues to build the passion for winning this season. Together, young and upperclassmen alike, we can do this.”
The Bearcats will take the field against the Idabel Warriors, for a scrimmage game, on Friday, August 22, 2014.
