Free youth fishing tournament big success

May 18, 2012

Shelby Milam, Justin Wheeler, Faith Folsom and Jay Flynn reeled in the top spots at the Free Youth Fishing Tournament that was held on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at McGee Creek Lake.

On Saturday, May 12, members of the Pushmataha County Sportsman Club teamed up with members from the McGee Creek Bass Club to host a free youth fishing tournament at McGee Creek Lake. The event was open to any youth that was sixteen years old and younger. Approximately twenty young anglers participated in the tournament. Several more were expected, but the wet, rainy conditions may have kept many of the kids from participating.

The rules were fairly simple. Any legal fish could be brought to the weigh-in. Contestants could fish from the shore or from a boat. Rod and reels or cane poles could be used as well as live bait or artificial lures. The kids fished from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. When it was time for the weigh-in, perch seemed to have been the main catch of the day.

Winning the tournament was Faith Folsom. Faith had a stringer weight of 7.73 pounds. Justin Wheeler came in second with a stringer weight of 6.68 pounds. Third place was won by Shelby Milam with a total weight of 3.21 lbs. The big fish of the tournament was caught by Jay Flynn which weighed 1.43 lbs. These four contestants all received plaques and very nice prizes. Also, every kid that entered the contest received a prize.

After the weigh-in, contestants were treated to a cookout featuring hot dogs and hamburgers with soft drinks and all the trimmings. All that attended seemed to enjoy the fishing and the good food.
