Lady Rams score on and off the court

March 22, 2012

The basketball court is not the only place the Lady Rams succeeded this season. They’re also doing quite well in the classroom. Rattan’s varsity girls basketball team was recognized as the academic state champions for Class 2A. The ceremony took place on championship Saturday March 10 at State Fair Arena. Rattan boasted a GPA of 3.96 for the first semester. That honor shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, though. The Lady Rams were also named academic state champions for the spring 2011 slow-pitch softball season and 2011 fall fast-pitch season. The Lady Rams finished the season tied for first place in the MC-6 standings and with an overall record of 20-10, marking the second consecutive year they have reached the 20-win plateau.

Many of the players were also members in 2011, when Rattan won the state slow-pitch softball championship and captured first place at the MC-6 basketball tournament. Coach Chris Gibbs said those girls don’t like to lose. “They’re just as competitive in their grades as well,” he said. Nine of those players are the daughters of teachers or administrators. “I guess education is all they know,” said Gibbs. Members of the team are Lyndsi Winship, Hannah Davidson, Megan Birchfield, Jadyn Gibbs, Lyndi Noel, Jaimie Williams, Jordan Awtry, Brenna House, Paige Pillars, Kayli Winship, Rachel Birchfield, Taylor Copeland, Stepheney Haddox, Kelli Himes and Bree’Andra Palmer. Dana House is the assistant coach.

Will Rattan be able to continue its run of success on the court and academic state championships? Gibbs said they have a handful of eighth-graders coming up who are also very competitive. “They’re all good students,” he said. So it looks like the A’s and victories will continue.

Rams Basketball - The Rattan High School Boys' Basketball Team, coached by Chris Brown and assisted by Michael Clay, was also recognized by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association with an Academic Achievement Award. They obtained a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or above. Team members include: Cade Clay, Landon Carper, Derek Wolfe, Bret Mack, Cullen Mack, Dustin Wolfe, Zach Brown, Brandon Jones, Sebastian Thurman, Tyler McAdams, AJ Davis, Dustin Davidson, Jonathan Samuels, Blake Watts, Mark Baze, and Efrem Parra.
