Local doctor arrested after assaulting an officer

April 24, 2014

An ER doctor, at Choctaw Memorial Hospital in Hugo, was arrested after allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Police say around 12:30 Tuesday morning, 50-year-old Dr. Steve Mederios refused to treat an inmate who had ripped out his stitches.

The inmate then tried to attack the doctor but was quickly restrained by an officer. Medeiros then verbally attacked the officer and bumped the officer with his chest.

"The officer warned the doctor at that time that if he didn't cease that he would be under arrest," said Billy Jenkins with the Hugo Police Department. "The doctor made a statement to the effect 'you will not arrest me without a fight."

Medeiros reportedly hit the officer in the eye, breaking his glasses, giving him a black eye, scratching his face and busting his lip.

Dr. Medeiros was evaluated at Choctaw Memorial Hospital after complaining of chest pains, before being booked into the Choctaw County Jail.
