Look Mom, I got a medal! Rethinking the self esteem movement

Has anyone really taken the time to look around lately and see what we are all doing to our children, well you not me as I have no kids. When your child competes in, lets say, an olympics type of scenario and comes home with a double gold medal something is wrong.

Now a days kids always make the team, get medals for participation, and are running around with cell phones before they can tie their own shoes. I think America as a whole needs a wake up call. I got my first cell phone when I was 17 years old, had to work hard to make the team, and only got a medal if I was good enough to make it to the top.

What is happening to this country if even winning a silver medal isn’t good enough? How will it be before you ask a kid if they won and they say, “No, but I came in double first.” And who comes up with these ideas? Losers! And do you know what these children do when they grow up? Buy homes they can’t afford, crush the financial market and yell at police officers when they get caught doing something wrong. We are raising a bunch of whiners who expect everything to go their way and get it handed to them on a silver, wait I mean gold, plate.

You don’t see couples starting out in smaller sized “starter homes” anymore, you see them going to the bank and getting a 4-5 bedroom home with 3 bathrooms, a hot tube and a 3 car garage. It doesn't matter that they really can’t afford it, that is what they want and they are not going to settle for a silver medal because they have been taught that they only deserve the best, no matter what the cost.

Next thing you know their house is getting foreclosed on. But who’s fault is this? Of course it isn’t the buyer’s fault, oh no it’s the banker’s fault. The guy who laid everything out in black and white in the paperwork. You want to know what the problem was? The people taking the loans didn’t read the black and white, all they saw was the big ole’ house they “deserved” to have.

Whatever happened to taking responsibility for your actions? I know, I know!!! Our country has become a bunch of spoiled little whiney brats who don’t care what happens as long as they get what they want, when they want it.

There is one thing in the Constitution, a key word that everyone has seemed to be overlooking lately; “pursuit.” This country was founded on the concept of Life, Liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness. No where does it say guaranteed happiness or worry free happiness. Nope it says pursuit, which means looking, working and striving to own it.

The problem is once people start expecting to be taken care of we are all doomed. Once they start using their vote on a “what’s in it for me” basis instead of who is best for the job or will do the best thing for the country it is going to be a downward slide that is going to be impossible to reverse. Unfortunately, there are more dumb people than smart people and in this country the majority rules. Pretty simple really but most don’t seem to grasp it.

So for all the “We don’t keep score at soccer games” generation, money wasn’t a worry, mom and dad were a bottomless pit of cash. Now all of a sudden that generation has grown up and expects the government (aka me and you) to replace Mom and Dad. All I can say is I don’t want to replace them. I am an American who’s very content with her life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Sure there are things I want like, a bigger house and a new car are a few of them but can I afford them? Not yet so I am waiting. See how that works?!?!

If everyone would just concentrate on those things, they wouldn’t have to go through all the other crap that they bring onto themselves. What else can I say?
