New superintendent ready for school year

August 10, 2011

Many were saddened when we lost our long time superintendent of schools Mark Virden last year but now it is time to look forward to a new school year and new leader. Cary Ammons was named the new Antlers Public Schools Superintendent.

Ammons graduated high school from Durant. After graduation he went to Southeastern to get his teaching credentials. After graduating from Southeastern he took is first job at Durant where he taught early childhood development for three years. He then went on to become the Assistant Principal of Clayton High School, where he also coached baseball. After leaving Clayton, he went on to be the Elementary principal at Talihina for two years. His most recent job was as Buffalo Valley where he was the superintendent for the past two years.

Mr. Ammons’ goal is to make sure that the students are provided with the best education possible and that they will work with anyone, but they have to be willing to work with the facilty as well. Mr. Ammons plans to have a student centered system.

“Kids must have structure,” said Ammons. “When a child has a substitute teacher and says ‘That’s not the way Mrs. Watts does it’ that is the child asking for structure in their own way. To get this accomplished, all of it, we need the parents help.”

Ammons also mentioned that any parents that are interested in joining the Bearcat PTO can contact him or Mr. Gentry.

However, Education doesn’t only run is his blood. His wife, Karla (Gordon) Ammons was recently hired as a 3rd grade teacher at Rattan Elementary. She previously taught at Tuskahoma for many years. Karla is excited to be home, as she graduated from Rattan High School. Along with Cary and Karla are their two children. Their daughter, Cady Mae, who will be starting Kindergarten at Rattan and their son, Cy, who is two years old.

With high expectations for the students and for themselves (facility), Mr. Ammons is looking forward to a great school year.
