Organic Farm in Pushmataha County licensed

June 7, 2012

With the growing health concerns and families and individuals wanting to live healthier life styles many are going to organic products and foods. This isn’t always easy for residents living in Southeastern Oklahoma, but things just got a little bit simpler.

The Lazy P Farm, owned and operated by Greg and Shawnda Pomana, along with their kids Madi and Zane Clark, received their Organic Farm Certification on May 21, 2012. This means that their farm met the Organic Standards established by the USDA/Natural Organic Program and adopted by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

The Lazy P Farm is the first in Pushmataha county history to be certified as an Organic Farm, and is farm number 188 in the entire state of Oklahoma. They have a current total of 25 acres of certified organic farm land.

To become an Organic Farm, the Lazy P Farm couldn’t use any chemicals or pesticides for three years and then had to pass random soil tests to prove that they hadn’t. However, this isn’t only limited to the soil. Along with the soil being organic, the seeds, fertilizers, and pest control products have to pass the tests as well.

To date, the Lazy P Farm is a Certified Organic grower of 100% Organic Vegetables, Herbs, Sunflowers and Native Grass Hay. But they aren’t going to stop there. They are also currently in a transition period taking their chickens, eggs, dairy and fish to Organic Certified as well. Cindy Ward, with the NRCS, presented the Lazy P Farm with a grant to help them with the transition. The grant will help provide things like ponds, green houses, fencing and so forth.

“Our goal is to raise 1,000,000 lbs of food!” said Shawnda Pomana. “We also have all natural honey. We can’t have certified organic honey since we can’t control where the bees go but it is natural.”

Produce and other products grown by Lazy P Farm can be purchased at the Antlers Farmers Market or directly from the Lazy P Farm. For more information or to contact Lazy P Farm please call 580-298-3174.
