Tea Party News: General election, are you ready?

October 19, 2012

It’s less than a month until the general election. Are you ready? Have you done your homework and are you prepared to cast an informed vote?

The first step in casting an informed vote is to find out what is on the ballot. My advice is to get a sample ballot from the Election Board. A sample ballot will have every race and state question that you will see on the official ballot on election day. You can take your sample ballot with you to the polls and transfer your choices from the sample onto the official ballot. It makes things move along more quickly and efficiently.

As for the races on the ballot, you must decide for yourself who is the best candidate. Who do you see as most closely aligned with your beliefs and will do what he says he will do? In other words, “Is the candidate trustworthy?”

Then you have the state questions. Look them over carefully. Ask questions. As we have found out in the past, the intent on some state questions is not always obvious. There are 3 questions you should ask yourself when making you decisions. Is it right? Do we need it? Can we afford it? If you answer no to any of these 3 questions it’s probably not a good idea.

How can you get answers to your questions? There are many sources of information. My favorite is to talk to the candidate themselves. Look up their voting record, if they have one. Talk to people who have dealt with them if you can. Be careful about listening to TV attack ads. As I have mentioned before, there’s usually just enough truth in them that they are not a complete lie.

Go to the Push For A Better America or other local Tea Party meeting. We try to have timely topics on the agenda and speakers of current interest. And contrary to popular belief, Democrats and Independents are welcome and attend on a regular basis. Come out and see us on October 26, 2012, in Molina’s Banquet Room. You may be pleasantly surprised.
