Tigers finish off Great Season in Overtime Thriller

March 9, 2012

The Tigers, competing in area play this past week, fell short of their goal to make the State tournament.

Fresh off an opening round area victory over Tupelo, the Tigers would take on the Red Oak Eagles in the brand new 16.8 million dollar Kingston gym. The gym was spectacular and felt like the Tigers were already at the big show.

Senior Jake Mattingly would get the opening tip for the Tigers, but it would be all Red Oak for the first quarter of the game. Sophomore Caleb Armstrong finally put the Tigers on the board with 1:30 left in the opening qtr. The Tigers couldn’t seem to find their groove the first quarter but made a comeback in the second.

It was a tough battle under the boards for control of the ball, and this quickly became a fast paced, aggressive ball game. The Tigers goal was still attainable at half with the Eagle only up 25-18. Caleb Armstrong started the third out with a bang ripping the net for a 3 to open things up and Junior Brandon Slocum got hot, as the Tigers battled back with reach 35-34 by the end of the 4th. The fourth quarter aged this parent about 10 years.

The Tigers hit some free throws to tie the score 44-44 with 2:01 left. Senior Terrell Morgan hit a big three point shot with .50 seconds left to give the Tigers their first lead of the game. The Eagles tied the score with 9.4 left 49-49 and we were headed to overtime. The Eagles controlled the ball and the Tigers couldn’t seem to get the momentum back, eventually falling to the Eagles 56-50.

It was a great game enjoyed by the many fans in attendance. Thank you to each of the fans that made the trip to support our Tigers. A special Thank you to the Boys and Girls teams for a fantastic year. You made Moyers proud!!
