VETERAN’S NEWS

December 11, 2013

BY Robert A. (Bob) Kinsler, US Army, Ret, DAV, VFW Post 3658, Adjutant/PAO (Public Affairs Officer)

Well, hopefully you all had a nice Thanksgiving. Found out that several VFW members that went through the November holiday without any family members surrounding them so next year with VFW support we will open the VFW Post hall to serve all Veterans (and their guest) a pot luck style Thanksgiving Dinner. I wonder if we might consider doing this on Christmas day.

A message from Secretary Shinseki (Secretary of VA): "Many will observe Thanksgiving and the upcoming Holiday Season without the warmth and companionship of families and friends. Their missions are difficult and dangerous, and they perform them without hesitation. In this season of Thanksgiving, let us pray for their well-being and safe return. As we gather at our own tables on November 28th, let us not only give thanks for the blessings in our own lives, but give thanks for the men and women who now serve, and for those who have served on Thanksgivings past."

On the job front: Wal-mart states: Your military status may have changed, but we know that you haven’t. You still have that same drive to better your life and the lives of others. Walmart and Sam’s Club can help. We expect to hire 100,000 veterans by 2018. Join us on our all-encompassing mission that sees millions of Americans live better by saving money every day.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
If you have been honorably discharged from the U.S. military within the last 12 months and meet our standard hiring criteria, there’s a position for you at Walmart or Sam’s Club.

Veterans who have been discharged from service more than 12 months ago are not eligible for priority status, but will be highly valued candidates based on their training and experience.

How about this one: If you drove trucks in the military, there's a good chance you can skip driving school and slide into the commercial driver's seat with relative ease, thanks to an initiative approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Oklahoma State Transportation Department now offers Military Skills Test Waiver for CDL applicants who plan to drive vehicles similar to those used in the military. It waives the road skills test requirement — meaning if you qualify, all you need to do is pass the written exam in order to get your CDL.

Now there is a list of Free Courses that you can get, just as soon as I can get it back I will publish it here.

Remember that you can see me in Person Every Saturday Night between 5:00 pm to 11:50 pm during the Saturday Family Dance. Or for those early birds that do not mind working a little bit, The Commander, Quartermaster, others and myself are at the VFW Post Wednesdays and Fridays from 0730 hours until we get the hall cleaned.
