Sheriff asks for salaries to come out of county general

In this morning's County Commissioner meeting the Sheriff's budget was once again a topic of discussion.

Duncan expressed being displeased with receiving monthly allotments of his budget instead of in one large installment.

"I don't like it and I don't agree with it," stated Duncan.

Duncan also asked for that at least one deputy salary to be taken from county general.

Also, purchase orders from the Sheriff's Department have came into question on bills that have been due since last year, not paid and now face going to collections.

Antlers resident crossbreeds vegetable/fruit

Tom Scott, 83, of Antlers, has discovered an odd and unexpected development in his garden. His tomatoes and cucumbers have decided to crossbreed leaving him with an interesting new item that looks like a tomato and has the knobs of a cucumber. According to Scott, each vegetable/fruit looks different and takes on its’ own shape.

Tulsa man arrested in connection to body found by Antlers

A Tulsa man was arrested Monday after the body of a Talala man who had been missing for a month was found north of Antlers this weekend.
Vernon Lee-Mountel Smith, 27, was arrested on on complaints of second-degree murder and kidnapping.
Smith was booked into the Tulsa Jail around 6:40 p.m. His bail was set at $75,000.
In 2005, Smith was convicted of two counts of assault and battery upon a correctional officer and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He served 10 years in prison.

Body of missing Talala man found near Antlers

The body of Chazz Holly, 27 of Talala, was recovered north of Antlers near the Indian Nation Turnpike.

Holly had last been seen on June 20, 2015, in Tulsa.

Clay Holly held a news conference after his son’s body was found stating that it was a kind of closure and thanked friends and family that had helped search in the heat for 6 hours after he received a tip to search the area.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and the Tulsa Police Department are investigating Holly’s disappearance and death.

Choctaw Nation to hold runoff Aug 8

The Run Off for District 2 candidates are: MIKE AMOS and JONATHAN ANTHONY WARD.

The Voting Precincts will be located in BETHEL and BROKEN BOW.

If the Members of the Choctaw Nation in District 2 have already requested an Absentee Ballot in the previous election, they will be sent an Absentee ballot automatically.

Any NEW REQUEST must be received by Wednesday, July 22, 2015, by 4:30pm.

Election Day will be Saturday Aug 8, 7:00 a.m.-7:00 pm

Obama announces new initiative for Choctaw Nation

Nearly 1,000 people crowded into Durant High School on Wednesday to hear President Barack Obama announce a new initiative, ConnectHome, a pilot program that will expand high-speed broadband Internet services to families in the Choctaw Nation and 27 other communities across the country.

“We can’t reverse centuries of history: Broken treaties, broken promises. But I believe we can come together as partners and forge a new path, based on trust and respect."

Obama to visit the Choctaw Nation next week

White House officials say President Obama is coming to Oklahoma next week.

Chief of the Choctaw Nation, Gary Batton, confirmed that Obama plans to visit the Choctaw Nation on Wednesday, July 15th in Durant and deliver remarks on expanding economic opportunity. The president plans to stay overnight and then visit the El Reno Correctional Institution west of Oklahoma City on Thursday.

In 2014 the Choctaw Nation was chosen as one of the President’s Promise Zones. They are designated to create jobs and increase economic security by partnering local communities with businesses.
