A site in Pushmataha County has been selected by CRU (Clean Renewable Utility) Energy Corporation as a possible location for the construction of a 1-Megawatt power plant.
Clayton Councilman, Dan Nix, has been coordinating with CRU to survey local conditions that would be appropriate for one of the several plants that are going to be constructed across Texas and Oklahoma.
According to CRU they have plans to construct a biogas facility in Ada and this renewable energy production strategy will be duplicated several times. “With the recent support of the USDA and the Biomass Crop Assistance Program, growers of energy crops are realizing very healthy economic returns on the production of specified crops,” said CRU.
The proposed plant that might be build in Clayton will be fueled by bio methane gas produced by the digestion of sorghum forage seed crops, all grown locally. It has been estimated that it requires 1000 acres of sorghum plants to generate 1 Megawatt of electricity.
CRU states that there are no negative impacts due to their plants. The economic impacts, in the form of jobs, taxes, crop purchases and additional business for merchants could be a big economic boost for Clayton and the surrounding areas.
There will be a Town Meeting held on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 where CRU will be giving more details on the proposed plant and be answering any and all questions. For time and place of the meeting contacted Clayton City Hall.
