Miss Whitney Noel, recent graduate of Rattan High School was recently named the third recipient of the Jim B. Collum Memorial Scholarship. It was presented by Mrs. Collum at the Rattan Awards Assembly on Thursday, May 19, 2011.
The scholarship was established by Jim’s wife, Marsha, his three children, Tracie, Christy and Britton and friends. Jim was a member of the Pushmataha County Fair Board for many years and watched many children prepare exhibits and show animals through 4-H and FFA. Jim, with the help of other adults put the annual Pushmataha County Horse Show on for everyone to enjoy, as part of the County Fair.
Jim always had a heart for these kids and what better way to allow his hard work, and dedication to the youth of Pushmataha County, than to honor his memory through a scholarship going to a deserving High School Senior. Jim and Marsha saw all three of t heir children graduate from college, so they and their children know the financial burden of an education beyond high school.
All three of their children received some scholarships, therefore assisting them to fulfill their dream of furthering their education. The criteria for applying for this scholarship is to have participated in 4-H or FFA during high school, a short essay is also required ad a short interview is also held for students applying. A committee of six individuals make the decision of whom they felt was best deserving of the Memorial Scholarship. Applications are available at the Pushmataha County Extension office and must be submitted to the Extension office by the middle of April of each year.
