I read an interesting article in a golf industry magazine the other day. The article was dealing with the fact that the game of golf has not grown since 2000.
The two main reasons are (1) time to play the game and (2) frustration with the game.
Frustration centers on the fact that most people can't break 100 on a par 72 course, that the came is too tough and therefore no fun.
The other reason, time, is associated with the course. Too many people looking for golf balls. Trying to negotiate a course that is too long or the greens are too fast or too hard to read.
The combination of taking 5 or 6 hours to play the game that is not fun is fatal.
Golf courses need to be designed for the average golfer. We need to consider par for the average golfer. Maybe t he par for the public should be 85. Maybe the cups should be larger. At any rate, we have to figure out a way to get the average golfer around an 18 hole course in no more than 4 hours.
If the industry doesn't get creative, it won't have to worry about it down the road as golf courses close due to lack of interest in the game.View more articles in:
