The Eastern Oklahoma Region of the American Red Cross recently held their first Regional Volunteer Recognition Cerimony. This ceremony was to honor the volunteers through the entire Eastern Oklahoma Region, which included over 30 counties.
Local volunteer Donna Willison Head, was honored with receiving the “Southeastern Oklahoma Chapter Administrative Volunteer of the Year Award 2011” for her contribution at the chapter level in McAlester.
Head is a 1969 graduate of Antlers High School and recently moved to Hugo from Idabel. She is the Disaster Action Team Lead for Choctaw and Pushmataha Counties with American Red Cross. Presently, she is on standby to be deployed for Hurricane Irene.
In 2010 the Southeastern Oklahoma Chapter lost their Director, and long-time Red Crosser, John Lester. Head stepped in throughout 2010 to ensure the chapter was still responding to disasters, administering Health and Safety courses, sending Service to Armed Forces messages, and recruiting and training volunteers. Head allowed the chapter’s doors to remain open with continued reach throughout the program area. Donna also gave up days, and weeks at a time, where she would leave her family to physically be in the chapter’s main office in McAlester. The chapter’s office could not have remained open without her incredible support and dedication.
Volunteer nominations were received and then voted on by a small group of volunteers from both the Chapter and Blood Services throughout the Eastern Region. This group is called the Esprit de Corps. Esprit de Corps volunteers were also responsible for organizing and coordinating the annual volunteer recognition event.
