It is once again time for the Choctaw Nation’s Annual Labor Day Festival and Pow Wow at Tushka Homma, September 1st through September 5th. The festival offers many activities that will appeal to all age groups and personalities.
The festival begins on Thursday, September 1st, with the Choctaw Nation Princess Pageant at 7:00 p.m. in the amphitheater. The winners of this pageant will go on to compete for the title of Little Miss, Junior Miss, or Miss Choctaw Nation.
On Friday morning, Sept. 2, the Arts and Crafts exhibits will open promptly at 10:00 a.m. with a “Going Lean Expo” to follow next to the Council Chambers at noon. At 2:00 p.m. a display of Gourd Dancing will take place on the Capitol lawn and then at 6:00 p.m. will be Chief Pyle Physical Fitness Challenge for youths ages 8-18 on the Council Chamber lawn. Concerts will start at 6:00 p.m. at the amphitheater and the Inter-Triable Pow Wow Grand Entry will take place on the Capitol Lawn at 7:00 p.m.
On Saturday, Sept. 3rd, the day will start bright and early with a 5K Run at 8:00 a.m., 3 on 3 Choctaw War Basketball Registrations and Horseshoe Tournament registrations. at 10:00 a.m. the 8th Annual Choctaw Art Show will start on the 2nd floor of the museum. A children's drama is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the amphitheater and the Tough, Tough Contest will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the Council Chamber lawn. Concerts will start at 6:00 p.m. at the amphitheater.
Sunday is the day for relaxing and golf! Two golf tournaments will take place on Sunday, one at 8:30 a.m. and one at 1:30 p.m., both at the Sycamore Springs Golf Course in Wilburton. At 10:00 a worship service will be held in the tent behind the amphitheater and gospel singing will follow shortly at the amphitheater beginning at noon.
Each year the Festival consists of several concerts by well-known and talented performers, this years performers will include Neal McCoy, 38 Special, Clay Walker, Ronnie Milsap, Gary Allen and Third Day. Along with the concerts there will be many sporting events at the festival as well. There will be the Annual Physical Fitness Challenge for youth ages 8-18; fast pitch softball, Checkers, Dominoes, Horseshoes,Volleyball, the Tough, Tough Choctaw Contest; 5K Run; and so much more.
Along with the many events there will also be carnival rides, specialty acts like Magician Russell Turner, mechanical bull rides, and Inca Flute players. The Labor Day Festival promises to be an exciting and fun-filled time for all. Opportunities to learn more about the Choctaw tribe will surround all who attend.
