On Saturday, September 24, 2011 at approximately 11:30 a.m. on a county road 7 miles south of HWY 271 and 3.5 miles east and 5 miles south of Albion in Pushmataha County a fatality collision occurred involving four motorcycles.
The motorcycles were traveling the same direction when the 2008 Honda Motorcycle driven by Cary L. Mellema, a 50 year old male from Newark, TX, lost control while going around a curve and hit an embankment. The 2008 Honda had radio communications with a 2002 Honda Motorcycle being driven by Gregory B. Chennault, a 51 year old male from Krugerville, TX, and immediately radioed that he had wrecked. The 2002 Honda slowed and pulled off the roadway to the right.
A 2009 Honda motorcycle being driven by Susan Maree Banda, a 44 year old female of Roanoke, Tx, witnessed the 2002 Honda depart the roadway and lost control, laying her bike over on its left side. A 2011 Harley Davidson being driven by Roger D. Caldwell, a 43 year old male from Denton, TX., was directly behind her and ran over the driver and her bike then struck a guardrail and slid approximately 45 feet on its right side.
Banda was pronounced dead at the scene from trunk internal injuries and was transported to the Talihina Funeral home and then to the Tulsa Medical Examiner’s office. Troopers are still investigating the reason for Banda’s crash.
Caldwell was transported to Sparks Regional Medial Center in Ft. Smith, AR., in stable condition with head, trunk internal and external injuries.
Mellema was transported by Air Ambulance to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa in stable condition with leg injuries. Troopers say the reason he crashed were speeds to fast for the roadways condition.
This incident was investigated by Trooper Chris Dennis of the Pushmataha County Detachment. Trooper Dennis was assisted by Talihina PD, LeFlore County EMS, Talihina EMS, Clayton EMS and Honobia Fire Department.
