On Monday, November 7, 2011 the City of Antlers Council members gathered for their monthly meeting at the Antlers City Hall. The meeting began at 5:00 p.m. by being called to order, a quorum was established and invocation was given.
The main order of this months meeting was to discuss and consider resolution number 2011-11, A resolution authorizing the calling and holding of a special election for the City of Antlers to put in place an excise tax of 7.5% in addition to all other city and state taxes upon gross receipts from hotels and motel rooms. This additional tax revenue would be used for street improvements and tourism with street repairs receiving 5% of the tax revenues and tourism to receive 2.5% of revenues. This tax will be added as a special election to the School Elections that are set to take place in February 2012.
What does this mean for residents of Antlers? Nothing really unless you regularly rent hotel or motel rooms in the city. This tax will only affect people who rent motel and hotel rooms and in no way is an increase in taxes for all residents in Antlers. The only way a resident of Antlers would have to pay this tax is if they rent a hotel or motel room. Antlers is currently one of the only cities in the area that doesn’t already have this type of tax in place. All moneys collected from this tax will go for street repairs and tourism, both to better our community. Once again, this is not an additional tax on residents of Antlers, just people how rent hotel and motel rooms within the City limits.
The next City Council meeting is December 5, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. at the Antlers City Hall. These meetings are open to the public.
