The Moyers Tigers spent the last week at the annual Coleman tourney. Up first for the Lady Tigers would be the Caney Cougars. The Ladies took to the court with desire but couldn’t convert and fell behind 24-5 at the half. The Ladies recouped at half and came back out much more impressive scoring immediately and at the end of three it was 40-11. Caney had a tough inside game and the Lady Tigers battled hard. The much improved Lady Tigers showed good passing skills and moved the ball well, but fell short of their goal 49-13.
The boys would take to the court next taking on Caney as well. These two teams met early in the season and it was a close game, this would not be the case this time around. Junior Brandon Slocum won the tip and it was all Tigers from there. Sr. Zach Brittingham put the first points on the board for the Tigers with a pull up jumper.
After one, the Tigers were in command 14-6. It would be the 2nd quarter that would prove most valuable with the Tigers going on a 27 point scoring run lead by Sr. Jake Mattingly hitting 3 three point baskets, followed by Jr. Jake Dudley with 2 three’s of his own. The Tigers were up 41-14 at half.
The 3rd and 4th quarters slowed down for the Tigers, but good defense inside kept the Cougars at bay with the Tigers advancing 64-43. Jake Mattingly and Jake Dudley each had 16 to lead the scoring, followed by Brandon Slocum with 13, So. Caleb Armstrong with 7, Sr. Terrell Morgan had 6, So. Tyler had 3, Zach Brittingham with 2 and Colton Shrum with a free-throw. Next up for the Tigers would be Allen.
Allen is ranked 14th is class A, so the Tigers knew they had their work cut out for them. This would prove to be a very aggressive game, and the Tigers never could find their groove, falling to Allen 80-49. Enough about that game…Let’s move on to the game for 3rd place between the Tigers and Milburn. Milburn handed the Tigers their first loss of the season earlier in the year, so it was payback time. Milburn won the tip and put points on the board first, but Jr. Jake Dudley quickly answered with 2 of his own. Sr. Terrell Morgan was strong on the boards, and the Tigers lead 12-11 after one.
The second qtr would see the lead change many times, but the Tigers still had the lead 28-23 at half. The Tigers came out in the 3rd determined and a quick paced game was in the Tigers favor. Pressure defense lead by Jake Dudley, So. Caleb Armstrong and Jr. Brandon Slocum kept the pressure on. Battling under the boards was Sr. Zach Brittingham, Terrell Morgan and Sr. Jake Mattingly to give the offense a chance to work its magic. Jake Dudley got hot in the 4th scoring 11 of his 27 points. Milburn was not going down easily and at one point late in the 4th was in the lead by 7.
The Tigers struggled at the free throw line most of the game, but managed to hit some free throws at the end of the 4th to secure the victory in a nail bitter 60-56. Jake Dudley lead the scoring with 27, followed by Brandon Slocum with 14, Jake Mattingly with 13, Caleb Armstrong with 4 and Zach Brittingham with 2. The Tigers received a third place plaque and Jake Dudley was honored with all tournament team.View more articles in:
