Last week both the Rattan Lady Rams and the Rattan Rams participated in State Baseball and Softball Tournaments, and both took home the prestigious title of State Champions.
The Lady Rams were named the Class 3A Slow-pitch Softball State Champs and Class 3A Academic Champs on Friday, May 4, 2012.
A parade of more than 70 vehicles, including lights and sirens, escorted them through Antlers on their way home to Rattan.
The Lady Rams repeated on the field and in the classroom with their titles at the State Championship. While they are still a long ways from equaling the 10 state championships of their baseball brethren, the Lady Rams are off to a good start on the softball diamond after repeating as Class 3A state champs.
The Lady Rams claimed gold once again with a 6-4 title victory over second-ranked Fletcher, going wire to wire with the top ranking in 3A this season, which put the bulls eye squarely on their back this season. And they could be headed for even more with just one senior on this year's roster.
The Lady Rams got off to a bit of a slow start in the title tilt, falling behind 3-0 after two stanzas. Fletcher plated an unearned run in the first thanks to an error and singles from Kayla Burgess and Lonni Baker. The Lady Wildcats picked up a pair in the second after Erica Whitefeather opened with a single ahead of one-out hits by Jordan Bowman and Kelsey Proudfoot.
The Lady Rams wasted base runners in each of the first two stanzas but finally broke through in the third after Jaimie Williams ignited things with a lead-off triple, the first of an amazing three in the contest. Kayli Winship tossed in a run-scoring single and Lyndsi Winship added another single before the frame was over as they trimmed the margin to 3-2.
Fletcher got a run back in the third on Lakeyna Forsythe’s RBI single but that was all the Lady Wildcats would get the rest of the way.
The top-ranked squad went ahead to stay in the fourth, spurred by Williams’ two-run triple that tied the game and Jadyn Gibbs’ ground out which scored her with the go-ahead tally.
Rattan notched one more just for insurance in the sixth when Williams tripled again and scored on a Gibbs run-scoring single.
Williams finished a perfect four for four to spark a 15-hit attack. Gibbs, Kayli Winship and Rachel Birchfield had two hits apiece. Baker and Bowman topped Fletcher, each with two hits as well.
The state championship wasn’t the only honor for the Lady Rams as they also took home hardware for the Class 3A academic state championship with a team GPA of 3.9.
Both teams have put in a lot of hard work and dedication this season and have taken home multiple tournament championship awards. The Lady Rams ended their season with a record of 34-8. The Rams season record was 30-7. Congratulations to the Lady Rams and the Rams for their hard work and dedication!View more articles in:
