Hazel Mae Cockrill

Hazel Mae Cockrill was born November 6, 1942 in Antlers to Eugene Ace & Mary Lois (Smith) Duncan. She passed from this life June 10, 2011 in Springdale, AR., at the age of 68. Hazel had lived in the Antlers area for all of her life until she joined her daughter in Arkansas just one short month ago. She enjoyed fishing, crafts, & shelling pecans to sell. She had a funny personality and enjoyed playing tricks & jokes on people. Hazel loved children in general, but was especially in love with her grandchildren & great-grandchildren.

Wanda Jean Barnett Horton

Wanda Jean Barnett Horton was born September 24, 1936 in Walls to Oscar and Maggie (Montgomery) Derryberry. She passed from this life June 11, 2011 in Antlers at the age of 74. Jean had lived in this area for 65 years and was a member of the Assebly of God Church in LeFlore County. Jean was a true red head, but a very loving mother. She often did without so her children could have things. Her favorite saying was "What you see is what you get". Jean's grandkids were the apple of her eye and she enjoyed spending time with them as well as other family and friends.

Weaton Named 2011-2012 Homecoming Queen

This year's theme for the Miss Pushmataha County Homecoming Pageant was "Big City Lights." The pageant was held June 3, 2011 at the Antlers High School Auditorium. The Auditorium was filled with family and friends that came out to show these young ladies their support.

15 Contestants competed in the pageant and your 2011-2012 Miss Pushmataha County Homecoming Queen is Sadie Wheaton. The Pageant also featured drawings and giveaways for Prizes, for the contestants and for the people in the audience.

Pine Creek Lake Team Bass Tournament

On Saturday, June 11, members of the Pushmataha County Sportsman Club held a team bass tournament on Pine Creek Lake. The lake is ten feet below normal level due to repair construction being done on the dam. The areas that most anglers usually fish were high and dry which made locating bass difficult for some. However, there were a few that seemed to have no trouble finding some "keeper" bass.

Street Dance to be held on High Street

The weather is heating up, kids are out of school and running amuck, the street sweeper has been out and about in Antlers. That can only mean one thing. It is time for the 2011 Pushmataha County Homecoming Celebration! The community has been busy and buzzing with anticipation as last minute projects get completed. This year’s theme is “Pushmataha County: Past ~ Present ~ Future.”

Congressman Boren will not seek re-election in 2012

U.S. Rep. Dan Boren recently announced that he will not be seeking re-election for a fifth term in Congress next year. Boren said he is through with politics and has no specific plans for his next career move.

"I don't have a job lined up," he said in an interview following his stunning announcement. "I am very open. I haven't had much time to think about it."

Boren expressed hope that whatever he ends up doing next he will be able to remain in Oklahoma, but he left the door open to taking a job outside the state.

Jeffie Marie Gibson

Jeffie Marie Gibson was born August 26, 1926 in Corinne to John & Ida (Wesley) Taylor. She passed from this life June 5, 2011 in Antlers at the age of 84. Jeffie was a lifetime resident of Goodwater. She was God’s servant who attended the Goodwater United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening, quilting, sewing, home canning, picking wild onions and digging snakeroots. She especially loved caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Laudie Clara Harrison

Ludie Clara Harrison was born March 27, 1914 in Little Cedar to Matthew Cole and Eustacia Jane (Reid) Smith. She passed from this life June 2, 2011 in Antlers at the age of 97. Ludie Clara Smith married Alton Ike Harrison in Antlers on December 28, 1931. She was the last surviving member of the Smith Family. Ludie was a member of the Little Cedar Baptist Church. She was a very talented cook and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Ludie was preceded in death by her husband: Alton Ike Harrison; a son: Alton Harrison, Jr.; parents: Matthew & Eustacia Smith.

JoAnn Loretta Sowell

JoAnn Loretta Sowell was born March 9, 1929 in Seminole to Levi Mandrell and Ora Bell (Hale) Mandrell. She passed from this life June 2, 2011 in Antlers at the age of 82. JoAnn married Thomas Sowell December 1, 1965 in Humble, TX., and together they raised seven children. JoAnn was a member of the Moyers Quilting Club “The MOPS”, Meals on Wheels and the Election Board. She enjoyed gardening, canning, working in her flower beds, fishing, reading, writing, working in VBS and spending time with her family and friends.
