Junior Bassmasters honored

The Pushmataha County Junior Bassmasters held their second state qualifying bass fishing tournament on Hugo Lake on Saturday, August 20. The tournament was sponsored by FirstBank of Atoka. FirstBank donated $300.00 to the club to be used for prizes for each angler that competed.

With temperatures forecasted to be around 108 degrees, tournament hours were shortened to start at safe light and end at 1:00 p.m.

Family altercation leads to gun play

A family altercation over tools turned to gun play and an Antlers man now faces charges of reckless conduct with a firearm.

Charges filed last week in district court stem from an August 6 incident involving an argument between Cy Ditzler, who was charged, and his son-in-law, Lee DeWitt.

County Faces Redistricting

This month’s County Commissioners’ meeting was far from normal as many citizens attended to hear the discussion of the Redistricting of Pushmataha County. Due to the high volume of individuals attending (60 plus citizens) the meeting was moved to the Community room in order to accommodate the large turnout.

If the tragic stories of abused and neglected children have broken your heart repeatedly, it may be time to take a positive step and make a real difference in a child’s life. Little Dixie Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program is offering volunteer training for all individuals wanting to become a child advocate.

S.E. OK FFA Rodeo Series just around the corner

The Southeastern Oklahoma FFA Rodeo Series will be making it’s first stop in Hugo on August 25th through the 27th.

Some of the events that will be included in this rodeo are Sr. and Jr. Bulls, Barrels, Poles, Bronc Riding, Goat Tying, Steer Wrestling and many others. There will also be calf riding for the little ones 8 years of age and under.

This event is open for participants who are 19 and under. Saddles will be awarded to High Point. Boys and girls junior ages are 12 and under and 14 and under for bulls.

Taylor signs with Carl Albert Jr. College

Parker Taylor, a 2011 Rattan High School Graduate, recently signed with Carl Albert Junior College to play baseball this year.

Anglers fish Sardis tournament

Members of the Pushmataha County Sportsman Club held a bass tournament on August 13, at Sardis Lake. The temperature during the club’s last four bass tournaments had reached well above the one hundred-degree mark, but only reached into the upper nineties for this one. A welcomed change. The cooler temps, however, did not seem to make the bass want to bite anymore than when it was extremely hot. Only four anglers were able to catch two or more keeper bass.

New superintendent ready for school year

Many were saddened when we lost our long time superintendent of schools Mark Virden last year but now it is time to look forward to a new school year and new leader. Cary Ammons was named the new Antlers Public Schools Superintendent.

Passport to the Future holds 2011 Art Camp

During the week of July 26th – 29th the Passport to the Future Mentoring Program hosted Art Camp 2011.  The mentoring staff of Pushmataha & Choctaw County choses 5 mentees from each county and invited them to come and learn about drawing, sculpting, painting, photography & scrapbooking.  We were amazed at the gift they all had.

Burn ban expanded to encompass all 77 Counties

Governor Mary Fallin has expanded the ban on outdoor burning to all of Oklahoma’s 77 counties. The Executive Proclamation expands the 45-county burn ban that was put in place on July 14, as the extreme to excessive drought conditions continue to worsen.

“We have just experienced the hottest July on record,” Fallin said. “The predictions of unrelenting extreme heat with no relief in sight make the statewide burn ban necessary.”
