Candidates for the Board of Education in Pushmataha County school districts file Declarations of Candidacy beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, December 3, 2012.
Jack Matthews, Secretary of the Pushmataha County Election Board, said the filing period ends at 5 p.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2012.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Tommy Allen stopped a white pickup on Highway 3 near cloudy road for driving on the middle line of t he roadway. After the vehicle was stopped, the driver was identified as Jennifer Bailey, 30 year old female of Rattan.
Under the direction of 6th Grade Social Studies teacher Linda Hawkins, 3 students from Rattan Elementary were presented cash awards for their entries in the Patriot's Pen Essay Writing Contest sponsored by the VFW Post 8316. Ira Taylor received 1st place, Triston Tuck received 2nd place, and Kaleigh Kopp received 3rd place for their literary response to the theme, "What I Would Tell America's Founding Fathers." Pictured presenting the cash awards are Mrs. Hawkins and Representatives from VFW Post 8316.
This year marks the fourth year that International Paper’s Valliant Mill has partnered with Little Dixie Community Action Agency in efforts to help assist families during the holiday season. Through this collaboration, these organizations provide “Thanksgiving-Themed” food baskets to needy families to help lessen the financial strain being experienced by so many during these tough economic times.
Mr. Brent Franks, Pushmataha County resident, business owner, minister, and former Mayor of the City of Antlers, was recently elected as Chairman for Little Dixie Community Action Agency’s Board of Directors.
Little Dixie has a tripartite board comprised of 27 members representing the Public, Private and Low Income sectors of the Communities. Mr. Franks serves in the Private Sector representing the Pushmataha County Ministerial Alliance. He has served on Little Dixie’s Board of Directors since April 2005 and as the Vice-Chairman for the past three years.

Gun Owners who Open Carry Must Have a Handgun License
Governor Mary Fallin today reminded citizens who plan to take advantage of Oklahoma’s “Open Carry” law to study the law and remain in compliance. Under the new law, which goes into effect tomorrow, November 1, citizens with a handgun license issued by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) will now be able to carry both concealed handguns and openly displayed hand guns. Previously, license holders were only able to carry concealed weapons.
President Obama made a visit to Red Cross National Headquarters (NHQ) in Washington, DC, Tuesday for a news conference filmed live from Red Cross's Disaster Operations Center (DOC) to make an update of the recent destruction from Hurricane Sandy. Attending the filming was Donna Head, Hugo, shown greeting the President after the filming. Mrs. Head is the Choctaw-Pushmataha County Disaster Action Team Lead. Donna is presently working at NHQ in Washington, DC.

The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma held its 14th annual Outstanding Elder Banquet Nov. 1 at the Choctaw Casino Resort in Durant. Outstanding elders from all of the districts were recognized and enjoyed a special evening held in their honor. Two of the nominees were chosen from the tribe’s 17 community centers as this year’s top male and female elders, judged by a panel of three to be awarded for their exceptional accomplishments. This year’s Outstanding Elders are Willie Walley of District 9, Durant, and Carolyn Bohanan of District 7, Wright City.
