Wildfire threatens homes

On Friday, October 7, 2011 local fire departments responded to a large grass fire that was burning about 4 miles east of Antlers on HWY 3. The fire dominated the south side of the road, tearing through trees and fields, with smoke that could be seen from inside city limits. With the strong winds, many were worried that the fire would be pushed into Antlers or shift and cross the highway. On Sunday morning, October 9, 2011 the fire was still smoldering but was not spreading or causing anymore damage, that could be seen from the roadway.

Flu shots to be available soon at health department

There is no better time than now to receive your annual flu shot, according to state health officials.  

"As much as 10 percent of the U.S. Workforce will get the flu this year, with 17 million workdays lost as a result," said State Health Department Commissioner Dr. Terry Cline.  "Receiving a flu vaccination from your local county health department, your physician, or any of the many places flu shots are available, is absolutely the best way for Oklahomans and their families to stay healthy this winter."

Argument leads to gunfire and felony charges

A verbal altercation led to gunfire and felony charges following an incident north of Antlers.

According to reports filed in district court, Pushmataha County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Wilkerson took a complaint on September 21 at a residence at K River Campground. The reporting party, Ed Bakemeyer, told the deputy that he and the shooter, James Scott Anderson, had gotten unto a verbal altercation, after which Anderson left and came back with a rifle.

Motorcycle wreck turns fatal

On Saturday, September 24, 2011 at approximately 11:30 a.m. on a county road 7 miles south of HWY 271 and 3.5 miles east and 5 miles south of Albion in Pushmataha County a fatality collision occurred involving four motorcycles.

10th Annual Deer Festival & Outdoor Show to kick-off Friday

The 2011 Deer Festival and Outdoor Show is finally here! All of the planning and preparations are almost complete as the festivities are set to open this Friday, September 30th, and continue on throughout Saturday, October 1st at the Pushmataha County Fair Grounds in Antlers. The community is buzzing with anticipation as this year plans to be even bigger and better than the last. The festival will carry its normal outdoor theme with plenty of events, booths and entertainment to keep the entire family happy.

Murder trial ends with acquittal

Last week Fred Lloyd Holder faced a jury of his peers after being charged with Murder in the First Degree. Holder was charged with the murder of Jacky Dellinger on April 23, 2010. Dellinger was found dead on March 6, 2009.

On March 6th, 2009, relatives found Jacky Ray Dellinger dead on his property in Rattan, with a fatal gunshot wound. Investigators had a prime suspect, Fred Holder, but it would take a year to gather enough evidence to acquire an arrest warrant.

ATV accident leaves two hospitalized

On Sunday, September 18, 2011 at approximately 2:00 a.m. on private property about 7 miles east of Antlers, near Dozier Road and HWY 3 an injury incident occurred.

A 2011 Polaris Ranger 800, being driven on a private driveway by Daniella Lea Williams, went over a bump causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle then overturned 1 1/4 times throwing both the Williams and passenger from the vehicle. The Polaris came to rest with Williams pinned underneath the drivers side.

Bigfoot festival receives Art Council Grant

The Honobia Bigfoot Organization received an Oklahoma Arts Council Grant in the amount of $500.00. These funds will help defray the cost of the art show and entertainment for this years festival to be held September 30 and October 1, 2011, at Christ 40 acres in Honobia, Oklahoma.

The Honobia Bigfoot Festival has something for everyone such as an Art Show, Arts & Crafts, Food Booths, Live Entertainment, Games for the Children, 5 K Run, Pictures taken with Bigfoot, Bigfoot Story Telling and a Bigfoot Conference.

Antler School tries to save second largest Red Oak in State

Attempts are being made to see what can be done to save the giant old Red Oak tree that lives in the Antlers Elementary School playground. The Red Oak is thought to be the second largest Red Oak in the State of Oklahoma and has shaded playing school children for many years. Forester Chirs Joslin of the Oklahoma Forestrty Service, Mark Bays - OKC Urban Specialist and the Superintendent of Antlers Public Schools, Cary Ammons, are shown making an evaluation of what needs to be done to save the tree.

County Free Fair to kick off

Once again it is time for the Pushmataha County Free Fair. The fair will take place from Wednesday, September 14th until Saturday, September 17th. Indoor entries will be accepted Wednesday, September 14, 2011 beginning at 10:00 a.m. until closing at 6:00 p.m.

On Thursday, September 15, 2011 all baked goods and fresh flower arrangements must be entered by 9:00 a.m. and then the Exhibit building will be closed until after the judging is completed.

All livestock must be entered by 12:00 Noon on Thursday, September 15.
