Car chase ends in gunfire

March 7, 2013

A truck driver from Broken Arrow woke from a nap at the truck stop just outside Antlers to see the shooting that took place after the car chase had came to an end. Terry Owen snapped this shot from the sleeper of his Blue Bell semi when he heard the commotion outside.

A man is still in critical condition a week after a pursuit ended in gunfire in Pushmataha County, last week.

Investigators stayed at the scene of the shooting for six hours in Antlers.

Witnesses said that they saw a white car cornering a little close to the corner of the EZ Go and McDonald's buildings, located on the Indian Nation Turnpike in Antlers. When they looked out, they saw a trooper hit the vehicle in the back. What happened next caught many by surprise, shots were fired.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Scott Hampton said that the gunshots ended the chase that started when a driver sped off on Highway 3, headed north on the turnpike around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon, February 27th.

"We were given a call of a stolen vehicle in the area. The troopers located that car inside the city limits of Antlers. A pursuit ensued and the troopers pursued them up to this point," he said.

Hampton continued on to say that the pursuit only lasted a few minutes but as they were able to box the suspect in, gunshots were exchanged.

"At the end of one of those TVI's [Tactical Vehicle Intervention], which was successful, shots were fired by one of our personnel, one of our troopers and the suspect was hit by gunfire and sent to a Tulsa hospital," he said.

Hampton said that the man had pointed a rifle at the trooper, so the trooper shot in self-defense hitting the man in the head and hand.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol and OSBI are investigating the incident. Hampton said charges are pending for the suspect.

The trooper involved in the shooting was unharmed.

Investigators released the name of the man who was shot by a state trooper in Antlers. The suspect is 24-year-old Russell Doctor of Crowder. At last report, Doctor is in stable condition at a Tulsa hospital and charges against him are pending.
