Gun Control: When is too much too much?

March 25, 2011

New local gun laws had to change following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling. They ruled that an American’s Constitutional Right to gun ownership applies nationwide. Legal challenges and debate has continued after the ruling in June, that American’s have the right to own a gun for self defense anywhere they live. This ruling was in response to a challenge of a 28 year old gun ban in Chicago, Illinois.

The right to have a gun is a fundamental right under the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and applies to all state and local jurisdictions. The Supreme Court got something right! If we take away the right to own firearms, we might as well start hacking off other parts of the Constitution as law makers see it fit. They feel stricter gun laws will decrease violence and make cities like Chicago a safer place to live.

This is it one of the stupidest thing I have ever heard. To take away a law-abiding citizen’s right to have a firearm would a rash and careless way to not solve a serious problem. This act would not only increase the criminals activities but it would also leave the citizens helpless to defend themselves against attack. If a criminal has a gun, and it is illegal for a good citizen to have one, what is stopping them from taking over these areas all together?

If you want a perfect example of why this isn’t going to work, Mexico. Mexican citizens can own firearms but there are many restrictions and major punishments if the law isn’t followed precisely. Citizens can only have firearms in their homes and the gun has to be approved for ownership by the Government. A few of the restrictions are it can not be full-automatic, can’t be semi-auto that is larger than a 380, no rifle that is larger than a 30 cal; no shotgun larger than a 12 gage; and no barrels shorter than 25”. And those are just a few of them. And forget about carrying it with you. They do have permits available, but are next to impossible to get.

Also, there is only one store in the entire COUNTRY that sells guns. It is located in Mexico City. Every firearm that is sold is registered with the Mexican Army. You have to apply and it takes about a month to be approved or denied. Approval will be denied once you own more than 2 handguns or 10 long guns.

Now looking at Mexico, who has very strict gun laws, does it look like to works to you? In my mind I don’t see how it possibly could. People will always do things against each other, and will always try to take what isn’t theirs. Taking away someone’s right to protect themselves (TO BEAR ARMS) is like signing their death warrant.

That is when too much Gun Control is too much!
