Homecoming festivities to be underway

June 21, 2012

With the weather steadily heating up, kids being out of school and gardeners asking for rain it can only mean one thing, the 2012 Pushmataha County Homecoming is once again upon us. The community is buzzing with anticipation, wondering what will come and hoping for a grand celebration with family and friends. This year’s theme is “Push For A Good Time,” and that is exactly what we plan to do!

The carnival is once again back in town and will take its normal spot at the Pushmataha County Fair Grounds. The carnival will be in town until Saturday, as always, so make sure to stop out and see what fun and games they have to offer this year.

Visitors, guests and former residents are asked to stop by the Historic Frisco Depot and register! The Depot will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.

On Friday, June 15, 2012, class reunions and get-togethers will begin to take place around Antlers, Moyer and Rattan. In sticking with tradition, the Annual Bean Supper will take place in the Rattan Cafeteria from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The cost is only $5.00 per adult and $3.00 for children under 12 years old. The Antlers All School reunion will take place from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the High School, and the Moyers all class reunion will take place in the Moyers Library at 6:00 p.m.

Acoustical picking and singing will be able to be heard at the Wildlife Heritage Center in Antlers as Pickin’ on the Porch kicks off at 6 p.m. Admission is free but donations are accepted. Refreshments will be available and all donations for refreshments will benefit the “Passport to the Future” mentoring organization.

Saturday will start off with a “bang” as the Masonic Lodge will hold their Annual Turtle Races at 8:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church’s parking lot. Registration will open at 7:30 p.m. This race is for terrapins only.

The parade will being making it’s way down main street at 10:00 a.m. so make sure to get there early so you can get a good spot! Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs, sunscreen and plenty of water!

After the parade the Antlers Fire Department will hold a Disaster Demonstration downtown starting at 11:00 a.m. At 1:00 a.m., also downtown, vendors will open their booths and welcome the crowds. At 2:00 p.m. there will be a political speaking at the FirstBank Park where residents will get another chance to get to know the candidates who are running for Sheriff.

The much anticipated Fish Fry and Gospel Singing will take place at 500 p.m. at the FirstBank Park in Antlers. The headlining gospel group that will perform will be Sugarfoot. Also in the line up to take the stage at 7:00 p.m. will be Grandpa’s Neighbors, The Believers and Higher Praise.

At the same time the Fish Fry is kicking off there will be Red Dirt Country Music starting up in the downtown area. At 8:00 p.m. the Street Dance will come to life with the headlining band, the Dustin Perkins Bands.

While you and your loved ones are having, what is sure to be a great time, make sure to follow some simple rules: Watch your children, throw your trash away in a designated area and never drink and drive!
