On Tuesday, May 3, 2011 the Rattan High School Lady Rams Softball Team headed for the Class 3A State Tournament in Oklahoma City.
Not only did they win the Regional Tournament the week before but there were recognized not only for their athletic abilities but also for their academic success as well. At the State Tournament they were presented the Academic Achievement Award for having the highest GPA (grade point average) in Class 3A play. The team had an overall GPA of 3.888 for the year.
During the first round of play the Lady Rams went up against the Fletcher Lady Wildcats. Rattan managed only eight hits in its opener, but made the most of them to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2008. The Lady Rams got three runs in the first inning off a pair of hits, a pair of errors and a walk and didn’t score again until added two runs in the fifth. The Lady Rams won with a final score of 5-2.
Next it was the Semifinals where the Lady Rams went up against the Barnsdall Lady Panthers. Rattan got a little measure of revenge as it eliminated the same Barnsdall team that knocked it off in the 2010 quarterfinals. Jamie Williams had two triples and a double and scored four times for Rattan. Kayli Winship had four runs and scored three runs. The Lady Rams took this game 15 to 10 over Barnsdall.
The third and final round was for the whole enchilada, the Championship game against the Dewar Dragons! Rattan wasted no time as they scored two runs in the first inning and never trailed. Both teams hammered 14 hits, but Rattan made them count more often. Stephany Roden, one of two seniors on the team, was 3-for-3 and drove in two runs. Jadyn Gibbs also had three hits, including a two-RBI single in the fifth to push her team’s lead to 5-2.
Jamie Williams had a pair of hits and scored twice while Kayli Winship was 2-for-4 and got Rattan’s day going with an inside-the-park home run in the first.
Dewar tried to keep up, but the Lady Dragons couldn’t get the opportune hit and stranded 10 base runners. But a repeat championship wasn’t in the works for Dewar. Instead, youth prevailed. In doing so, a pair of seniors, Carleigh Crowley and Stephany Roden made it to state four years in a row and finally get to take home a Championship!
“This bunch of girls is by far the most athletic that I’ve coached and the most enjoyable. They bust their tails day in and day out and it finally paid off,” said Coach Paul Watts. “I’m very tickled for them. It’s four years in a row they’ve made it here and I’m relieved they competed and looked good. I’m really excited for those two seniors.”
The Lady Rams have shown future athleates how important it is to maintain success both on and off the field because after an impressive display of physical skill during the tournament, the Academic Achievement Award wasn’t the only thing they were going to bring home! The Rattan Lady Rams were named the 2011 Class 3A State Softball Champions! Way to go girls! We are all so proud of your hard work and dedication!View more articles in:
